Trip reports / DIE NIEUWE PRINS (HVH - MSV - HVH)
« on: June 17, 2017, 03:38:12 PM »
Some pretty good photo opportunities of shipping/tugs should be obtained from this inland cruise ship operating between Hoek van Holland and Maasvlakte (see marinetraffic screen shot). Looks better value than the long Spido trip from Rotterdam to Maasvlakte.

As coasterwatcher says, "the only correct spelling of the name is on the ship's registration papers" and the closest we are likely to get to those is what is published in Lloyd's Register. That in turn is available to us from the Equasis site.
The idea of standardising by presenting the WRONG name of the ship makes this site one of the least-accurate information sources. I note that BACO-LINER 1 has been changed throughout to BACO LINER I (Roman numeral/no hyphen) yet the other two ships are given numbers 2 and 3. Where's the logic in that?
Changing hundreds of ship names to the wrong one is a complete waste of admin time and is just plain stupid!!

Dead right Bob.
The "corrections" team appear not to have a single Lloyds Shipping Index between them or if they do they prefer to ignore them.
It is BACO-LINER 1, BACO-LINER 2 and BACO-LINER 3.
They are also confused by Greek ship names thus correct name MARIETTA E. has to be changed to MARIETTA E

Help and Advice / Re: Ship spotting holiday location Rotterdam
« on: August 16, 2016, 09:08:44 AM »
Rotterdam-area is great for shipspotting but the problem is the position of the sun.
In case you stay at Maassluis, it is always opposite of you, so bad pictures.
Crossing with the ferry to Rozenburg is better.
Two hotels at Rozenburg: Hotel Rozenburg and Hotel Pico (have not been there myself).
At Rozenburg you can sit along the New Waterway near the the ferry-landing.
Hotels on website www . booking . com (type in the name of the town: Rozenburg, Maassluis, etc.)
Staying at Rozenburg and owning a car give you also to possibility to drive to the far end of the "peninsula": there you see Europoort and New Waterway.
Take a look at Google-Maps for orientation.

I must correct you Pieter - Maassluis is excellent for morning photos!
By late morning you have to cross over on the ferry to catch the sun.
But at the Rozenburg ferry there there is to much background clutter for nice photos imo.
So photographers used to walk south east along the footway down to radar post 8 where there is a background screen of trees which is much more acceptable. At this point there is a small lay by where local photographers used to take photos. Now it is some years since I went there!
If there is rain forecast and you have no car - best to stay near the cafe at the Rozenburg ferry and hope for an improvement and get good light until the evening.

According to Lloyds List today they join the "idle fleet"......

I am surprised that nobody so far has been honest enough to tell that the first thing they look at is the number of comments that a picture has generated.  ;)

The number of views to even a mediocre shot explodes when someboday places a comment, so somehow it is factor that significantly counts....

This morning I posted three shots, one got a comment and has already been seen quite a lot, while another shot showed a (to me much more interesting) ship for the very first time on the site, and the number of views are far less.....

I agree with you pieter.

Perhaps admin might fix it to show no of "likes" under the thumbnail as is done for hits, comments.

At the moment you have to click your own picture to check for any "likes" - thereby adding to the hits total!!

Over to you pieter.

BTW thanks for the useful info. you usually include with your uploads.

Shipping News and information / Re: Greenock Ocean Terminal
« on: July 28, 2015, 07:15:37 AM »
It seems like only a few years ago (actually late 70s) that Greenock was served by the main trans Atlantic services of United States Lines (C4-S adapted for containers) and Seatrain Lines (Asialiner etc) giving direct connections with North America. At that time non of these lines called at Liverpool.

After the loss of those trades Greenock downsized drastically in importance to what it is now.

Best of luck for the future!

A good time to buy big ships perhaps.

The price of iron ore has slumped from 190usd in 2011 to 44usd per tonne ie the Australians are almost giving the stuff away as panic grips the markets

Ken, thanks for the huge efforts you have made for this site.
Now maybe you can "retire" and even maybe take a nice enjoyable cruise holiday.........to pick up some nice ship photos!!!
Regards Mike

Are "members" going to be eventually charged for uploading photos?

I mean - first upload photo free then 1 euro (say) charge per extra photo upload of the same ship taken on the same day? Or charge a membership fee if you want to upload images bigger than say 1024x768px as one aircraft site does.

It costs a lot of money to keep this site running, employing technical experts to fix it and reduce downtime etc

Yes that seems to be the case.

The Stena Explorer is currently laid up in Holyhead and will soon be gone.

Stena foot passengers will have to make do with a single day crossing on Stena Nordica's bigger replacement - but to Dublin rather than Dun Laoghire. That's the rumour.

Stena Nordica out of action at the moment due to collision damage after recent storms.
