Shipping News and information / Re: Fred Olsen Cruises disposals
« on: August 21, 2020, 06:00:20 PM »
Latest marketing email from Fred. Olsen (21 August) informs us that "We would also like to let you know that when we return to the waters in 2021 our new ships Bolette and Borealis will be taking on itineraries sailing from UK ports for sister ships Black Watch and Boudicca, which we plan to retire from our fleet. Both vessels have served us very well over the years and we know they are dearly loved by many of our guests. We will be celebrating their time with us over the coming weeks so please keep an eye on our official Facebook page, where you will be able to share your memories."

Sailing on the Solent in a dinghy as a young boy, photographing seagulls and buoys and finishing the film in my camera. Ten minutes later the old P&O liner Oriana passed-by belching thick black smoke from all the engine room vents with passengers gathering on the decks wearing life jackets. She passed by less than 100 yards away. 20 minutes later tugs came screaming down Southampton water with hoses ready. A very dramatic scene, fortunately no one was injured, they swung the Oriana around near Bramble Bank and towed her back to Southampton, still belching smoke. If only I had a few shots left in my camera...   I remember trying to calculate how many passengers I could save in my little dinghy!

Shipping News and information / Something going on off Penzance...?

Some strange movements of the Wilson Gaeta, (making circles), Sunshine Express and Aburaq (turned 180) between Penzance and Milford Haven - according to AIS. I hope no one is in danger - 50 knot winds currently being recorded. Gordon

The 'Circle Line' tour is well worth it, taking you around the Manhatten island, or take the free ferry to Staten Island and back again. Unfortunately not much shipping on either trip, like London Docks all now trendy flats or acres of derelict land. Gordon

Further problems with the three prop QM2 with passengers revolting. Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4637240.stm  Funny to think the old Mauretania undertook eight transatlantic crossing on only three props whilst waiting for a replacement.

You may find the scrappers signed a purchase contract similar to the one used by P&O when selling the Canberra. I quote from the Canberra's website (www.sscanberra.com):-  P&O's insistence that Canberra never sail again was highlighted within the bill of sale itself. The breakers, who paid $5,640,818 for the ship, signed a contract with the following macabre clause:

"ownership of the propellers shall not pass until blades have been cut and removed from the vessel and ownership of the boiler, turbine-generators and propulsion motors shall not pass until the vessel is cut up to the extent that it is not practicable to rebuild the vessel"
