Some of you might have seen the news that a US Airways Airbus A320 aircraft ditched in the Hudson River after experiencing dual engine failure due to bridstrike. From the live coverage of the accident you could see a tug pushing the half submerged aircraft to shallow water, as it was slowly sinking. Several passenger vessels came to rescue the passengers and crew that were standing on the wing. Some got wet feets, but luckily no one was injured seriously in the accident.

Very nice job performed by the pilots and the boats rescueing the passengers!

« on: January 13, 2008, 04:34:50 PM »
The information about this is very vague, but Maersk Line have laid up five container vessels in Asia for a shorter period.

Adrian Maersk currently shows arrival at Kobe on January 27th.

One unknown C-type and two S types are also at anchor somewhere in Asia.

The type and position of the remaining vessel is unknown.

Tonker:

Saw a copy from a shipping newspaper yesterday in my office. There were an article about a 13000 TEU ship compared to Emma Maersk (11000 TEU).

The 13000 TEU vessel is going to be shorter, have less wide and less draft. The biggest difference that I could see on the picture is that the accommodation had been moved forward with only a few bays infront of it and the engine room still being aft, with a funnel (or two) towering up between the bays. All this making it possible to have more containers on top of each other, as there is "no IMO line to adhere to."

So if the article is right they do not need to make the larger than Emma to carry more containers.

I will try to see if it is still there tomorrow so I can give you the specifications of it.

If they had followed rule 19 they would not have collided with the barge.

No wonder that so many ships goes aground.

When I visited the channel a couple of times with Helene Maersk, due to Holyhead's collision, we sometimes had less than 1m beneath the keel and once I saw 0.5m on the echosounder with a draft of 9.10m.

The greatest problem in Felixstowe is their slow handling of the vessels. It is often called Felixslowe, because the container movements per hour are often very low.

Shipping News and information / Maersk Holyhead
« on: April 27, 2006, 12:42:20 AM »
Maersk Holyhead is planned to return into service again the 20th May on a contract for PDVSA (Venezuela). It has been docked for repairs in Willemstad, Curacao after its collision with Peqouet in the Marcaibo channel in November 2005.
Helene Maersk which is sailing instead of Holyhead will return to tramp service, when Holyhead is back.

Greetings from Venezuela
