Shipping News and information / Re: "MSC Lirica" on fire off Corfu

After 3 months in the MSC-hub port of Augusta she moored yesterday in Palumbo Shipyard of Malta for restoration of the damages.

The ship was not berthing in that place. Even if on the news the tendency is to say that there was a collision with the river cruise ship, it seems that the ship's controls were not under real control and one engine telegraph was blocked to increase ahead thrust. What we can learn from this situation is that the tugs have been not effective, the anchor port side dropped has been not effective, the so much famous expression "ships can't go against something in the historic city center because of shallow waters" has been not true. Because this accident is looking a copy of what happened to MSC SINFONIA in Honduras, has MSC a problem with hackers that can control from remote something?

Note also that the river cruise ship involved is RIVER COUNTESS, not MICHELANGELO.

Unfortunately HOEGH LONDON - 69000grt - Norwegian registered suffered a very extended cargo shifting and tilting due to massive bad weather in Sicily Channel. Vessel was in transit from Tangermed to Gemlik when was caught by 8 to 10 meters montaneous waves. Wind in excess of 60 kts when passing Cape Passero. Captain decided to turn back and shelter in Southeast Sicily. During the cargo decks inspections due to heavy equipment and project cargo moving very dangerously and widely one man was hit and lost his life- Various others injured, also in the accomodation quarters. Captain contacted Italian Coast Guard for assistance and was instructed to proceed at berth in Pozzallo harbour. Vessel arrived listed about 5

I suppose that a pilot was onboard the tanker, just unberthed from an oil terminal. How is it possible that it happened a so bad collision with the tanker ramming the frigate at 7 knots?

7
How can be possible to steam directly on a ship adrift waiting for orders? In daylight, good visibility, at 18+ knots and 300 meters of steel in front of you ?

8
Personally I prefer full loaded ships...heavy but more sincere in the prediction (at slow and normal speeds).

They must write something...
I remember in 2012 I was oboard a cruise ship visited by USCG in Italy before crossing the Atlantic for repositioning in the Caribbean and departing from a US port. They were writing every unsignificant problem, on their mind. At the end of the 3 days inspections there were something like 120 deficiencies.
Then we went to the restaurant...also with ship superintendent and drydock representatives. The day after the deficiencies not serious were canceled and the real ones were 6 or 7. Tutto il mondo

Shipping News and information / Re: Netherlands tug detained in Spain
« on: April 22, 2018, 03:24:54 PM »
Not sure if it is really like that,,but heard that the spanish government does not have anything in their budget for PSC and the PSC people have to finance their salaries through fines imposed on vessels calling spanish ports. That could be a reason for their bad names.

Personally me and my Companies ships never had problems with PSC in Spain. I don't think that in Spain there are low budget for PSC or in general for safety of the navigation and of the lifes at sea. You can imagine that they send warships and planes in East Med to contribute with various SAR operations and assistance on behalf of "migrants" coming from Africa to Italy and Greece or Turkey...you can figure out how much can be a problem the salary of "50 persons" that probably work already for the Maritime Administration...

Anyway...the remarks and deficiencies are related also to the quantity of provisions (!), the expired insurance for civil liability and basic firefighting equipment out of order...something that is not easy to justify...!

Interesting to read that they have lost the towed ships to use not adequate materials in order to save a few thousands euros, and if the foundering was to be "performed" to reduce the recycle costs?

They claim engine failure...but if you look on marinetraffic the speed just before the accident happened you see she was doing 17 knots and only a few seconds before 11 knots...very lucky not capesized...!
