A probable reason is:
The ships heading was not that of the "lock-direction".
Standing all foreward(= BEFORE the "turning-axis" of the vessel) is very hard to see that there is an angle between shipsheading and lock-direction.The result is the the bow/bridgewings are slightly over the quai and hitting the bridge.Same trouble in Terneuzen lock. It takes too long to explain my own experiences as a riverpilot with these vessels. Also blowing away like balloons...Those things can happen...misfortune...(happens in men's life!)

Sorry, she was afloat again by assistance of EIGHT tugs; this vessel type is known for very bad steering habbits since they came into service; groundings collisions a.s.o.

Dear ALL,

I want to draw your attentention on the above mentioned article by the hand of Tim Ruttledge of Sweden on his Weblog " Tims Times" with URL  www.ruttledge.se
It concerns the (SCRAP!!)vessel(!!) WARRIOR.
You'll find it under Archives March...
I personally can't believe and understand that Port Authorities in the whole world don't put an embargo on the vessel and prohibit her leaving port/sailing anyway!!!
When unfortunately "something happens" they can point to each other and wave away all responsibility!!!
(like most civil servants do!!)

TOO MANY "HAUPTM

As a retired RiverScheldt Pilot in Holland I bring my sincere condolances to Family and also to Chesapeake Pilots Association.
In my 31 year carreer I ,luckely, met "only" five of these cases.
Often these things still happen as a result of bad pilotladders = material; non-seamanship of crewmembers and not working according to IMPA and (EMPA)-regulations.

Sad Story!!!
(Unless the above story;piloting ships is/and stays a wonderfull and very responsable job!!)

Hello Mats,

Thanks for all the nice info on "Emma Maersk"; all the data and particulars!!!
Very interesting. It would be very nice(but almost impossible...) for a lot of members(maybe yourself?)to be one time on board such a vessel.
They would be impressed by the dimensions; and we- pilots- are thankfull to "work" with these- marvelously fitted - ships.
In my carreer I always liked the scandinavian vessels!!!

thanks again

Hello Mats; I went to see the pictures and comments.
Strange manoevres!!. Why did Maersk come to Port at first?; that's the question. We already learn on Nautical College that this move isn't preferrable...
Although before making a point : we first have to know ALL data...
Interesting though; certainly after having experienced two collisions in my pilot-career on RiverScheldt.

regards Geert(Zappa)
