Shipping News and information / NCL Breakaway Hull Art
« on: September 04, 2012, 05:07:12 PM »
I just saw a promo article for NCL's new BREAKAWAY... In keeping with NCL's hull art tradition, the article reveals the 'art' by the famous Peter Max. See site...

In my opinion: Tragic! Absolutely awful!

I've gotten to a point where I can accept the trend (though I much prefer a plain hull), but this is actually sad.

Really sad!

Shipping News and information / Re: Dangers of cruise ships

Oh don't worry about it! Take a cruise and have fun! Typical of the media to blow things out of proportion. Sure sometimes there's a problem, but it's seldom and doesn't affect many at all. We just got back on the NORWEGIAN DAWN and all was well! We've cruised lots of times... no big problems.

Book a Boat! :-D

Trip reports / Cruising NORWEGIAN DAWN this week!
« on: August 18, 2007, 12:56:59 AM »
Well we are off on the NORWEGIAN DAWN tomorrow (Saturday) at 4PM out of NewYork City. My camera is already to go! And so are we! I'll try to get some unique photos. We'll be heading down to the Bahamas and Bermuda for a week. Hurricame Dean will be far enough away (I think) (I hope), but it would have been fun to have gotten some good "Storm Pix" too! Good pixing my Ship Spotting friends!

I agree the older ships have a certain 'grace' about them, a lovelier profile and that splendid 'sheer'. It is disheartening to see so many old ships disappearing. My wife and I have made it a point to cruise on the old traditional ships before they are all gone. But I have yet to do a cruise on my most favorite ship, SAGA ROSE (former SAGAFJORD). Someday we will have to do that before she is gone as well.

But as the saying goes... "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," and people have their preferences. I have to admit that even some of the boxiest new liners are still beautiful to me. Maybe "beautiful" is the wrong word... maybe "impressive" describes the new breed of ships. And lets not forget the interiors of the new vessels, which are (to me) breath-taking, and (in my humble opinion) even prettier than any of the old ships.

The QE2 is a wonderful ship and maybe she deserves the prize, but my vote is for SAGA ROSE, maybe also SAGA RUBY (ex VISTAFJORD). FINNMARKEN is terrific but I prefer the KONG HARALD series, which is just a little sleeker. TROLLFJORD is boxy, but so interesting a design. Another beautiful liner of my life-time is the former KUNGSHOLM of 1966, until P&O took her and destoyed her magnifiscent style. They cut that ship up unmercilessly.

As for ships before my time? Unquestionably, CGT's NORMANDIE, the epitomy of the North Atlantic express liner.

"Finn" is often Irish but the origen is Viking. A fairly common name in Scandinavia.

I have posted a number of photos I took on Sunday in Brooklyn. I mention this is QM2's first visit there. Sorry I did not know she has been there before. But I guess this is now official and from now on this will be her American home.

Being a New Jerseyite I had thought getting to the terminal would have been difficult (I hate the NYC highways) but it went surprisingly well. Of course the terminal itself is as secure as a naval base, but the side streets to the west of the port offered some very nice spotting spots (with police all over the place). And the Valentino Pier Park which faces out to the harbor was an excellent place to take pix.

Still, for the pax, they will miss the traditional glide down the Hudson. You can't beat that sight anywhere!

Being a Norwegian-American and having immigrated to the USA in 1954 on the old N.A.L. "Stavangerfjord", I do recall that before the N.A.L. moved to Manhattan's piers 42 and 45, they docked I think somewhere near the new Red Hook terminal.
