Site related news, functions and modules / Re: IMO number
« on: January 03, 2024, 04:36:34 PM »
If you search the vessel name with "ship" or "vessel" in your search parameter a number of marine traffic monitoring sites will appear. Most of them will display the IMO and MMSI numbers without registering. Baltic Shipping is the best, but not every ship is there. Marine Traffic comes up the most often.

Is the Lighthouse category limited to lighthouses that are currently in use as active aids to navigation? May photos of lighthouses that have been decommissioned also be uploaded?

Help and Advice / Vessels Inside Museums?
« on: December 21, 2022, 09:25:06 PM »
The "Museum Ships" guideline states it includes "preserved afloat or ashore for historical purposes". Are photo of vessels preserved inside museums accepted? For example, a former fishing boat displayed inside a maritime museum.

Arrecife, Spain, is there.

If you are searching, go to Advanced Search. Select "Spain" in Country. Then select Arrecife from the "Port" drop-down list. (I found 7 photos tagged Arrecife, but none were wrecks.)

If you want to add Arrecife as a location to a photo submission, start typing Arr... in Location and it will pop up. (Don't try to input the full name at once.)

I've found doing that does not provide a named location. Try entering the name of the place in the location box. ShipSpotting does not always use what you think is the proper name. Enter the first few letters first, not the full name, to see if something recognizable comes up.

Site related news, functions and modules / Brooklyn, New York, Location
« on: December 06, 2022, 11:34:55 PM »
Hello,

Can a Location be created for "Brooklyn, United States"? The current Locations related to the Port of New York and New Jersey do not adequately describe it.

Thank you.

Site related news, functions and modules / Dates in the 1960s.
« on: September 17, 2022, 06:08:47 AM »
I've found that when I have set the exact date for photos I took in the 1960s the uploaded photo comes back with an "Unknown" date. Dates in the 1970s and later appear to work. I've put the exact date in the description, but it would be nice to have the date visible in the summary information.

The ships of the Age of Discovery were much smaller that one might imagine. During a visit to a full-size operational replica of one such ship, I overheard someone complaining that the replica was not full-size as it was not at all like what they had seen in films! The web sites of such replica ships will probably have information as to their original operation and crews. The early voyages of discovery were probably made by ships crewed in a fashion similar to the merchantmen of the day. One important member was the carpenter who could fashion new masts or other needed parts. The Wikipedia article on Columbus' Santa Maria has a detailed listing of the crew and their roles.
