Site related news, functions and modules / Re: IMO number
« on: February 20, 2024, 01:05:52 AM »
Hi Richard
Yes, new numbers are appearing, still 7 characters in length but starting with "1" eg IMO1041324 for containership Ning Yuan Tianjin. As IMO no's. first started in the "5's" range, even though these new numbers are going backwards, they are still unique.
Cheers

Morning
Marina = a dock or basin providing secure moorings for pleasure boats and often offering supply, repair, and other facilities.
Yachts are not ships, and for my liking a lot of "clutter" already on the site with the broader use of the shipspotting theme. How many seaside cities in the world if we accept yachting marina's, lighthouses has made an inroad to "swamp" ship images. But I skip anything that is less than several hundred tons of floating steel, the mere discussion and now highlighting the possibility of "yacht marine images" being acceptable would create a new flood of postings and make ships harder to find (filtering removes the pot pourri of the mixed shipping one normally sees when spotting).
Thanks

NPDL had been slot-chartering on Swire ships and plan to contribute their own to the USA service.

Hi MattB
If we have lighthouses, can't see why we can't have movie ships. Great idea already some good chatting. Re points raised:
Maxim Gorkiy in 1974 was hired for the movie Juggernaut, photoshopped to the name Britannic.
Speed2 (Keeanu and Sandra) were onboard Seabourn Legend

Be interesting to find what was the stand-in for the nefarious Exxon Valdez in Waterworld.

Good topic.

Foul weather at Port Chalmers as well hampered the last voyage of Nicolai Maersk and lead to schedule adjustments though the notice made no mention of working any other ports. Maersk Wellington to make an ad hoc call to Timaru as part of this issue.

North Asia service vessels are back to running 7-10 days late so still issues with reliability though nowhere near as bad as the covid era. Tauranga not immune from weather issues either, and recently HKG closed down as a cyclone passed, though a boon for photographers with 90 vessel moves photoed over the next couple of days as operations tried to catch up.

Ref. query from Peter Kerr - "I notice "DESTINE" is due to arrive in Wellington today. I'd only ever seen her as a bunkering tanker especially around Circular Quay, Sydney. Has she been sold? I haven't heard any news about that. She is staying in Wellington for 10 days - again interesting. Does anyone know what's up?"

I thought would move the matter to the regular New Zealand string:

In response, my sources advise - As noted the Destine previously operated in Sydney and noe following acquisition by Silver Fern Shipping, the bunker tanker will be permanently based in Wellington under the management of BP. She will operate from the Burnham Wharf in Evans Bay servicing the Interislander and Bluebridge fleets, and is intended to be renamed Kokako.

Two vessels absent from the Maersk "Southern Star" service are due to return imminently following drydockings, the SFL Maui and Rio de la Plata will replace the fill-in's SFL Hawaii and Monte Tamaro. Some speculation Maersk would take the opportunity to redecorate the Rio de la Plata into their colours and naming scheme as they did last year with other former Hamburg-Sud vessels. This possibility made more likely by a source
suggesting a Maersk Rio Delta will join the service at the same time other schedules nominate the Rio de la Plata.

Another newcomer to these parts also has a Maersk connection though that is from a past life, the 2005 built MSC Durham has been added to the Capricorn Asia service, previously sailed as Maersk Durham and more recently as CSL Santa Maria. At 4,838TEU one of the larger vessels MSC has brought down to New Zealand.

COSCO introducing a single-ship transtas service between Auckland, Bell Bay and Melbourne using Contship Yen

Lyttelton has capacity issues in its terminal, so Maersk have decided to use the retiring Maersk Nadi and Maersk Nansha to load containers for Asia at the end of their NZ service. They will load direct from Timaru and Nelson on their repositioning voyages,, reducing demand their usual tranship arranegment will incur, and also the Southern Star service (Rio's) will now have a fixed berth window at Lyttelton to improve Maersk's schedules.

Rangitata is now making 1 or 2 voyages per week between Napier and Gisborne for export containers. The Wairoa Road won't re-open for several months which is presumably the duration of the service. That said, the Napier/Taupo road was originally going to be closed for "months" but re-opened in 5 weeks, so possibly a similar result may change this fixture as well.

Veteran Cap Jackson IMO9484560 making an "ad hoc" voyage on US West Coast service, from Seattle mid November to Auckland, Australia, and then Tauranga where due 2.1.23. The 4,600 TEU vessel was completed in2010 and joins her sister on the service.

Help and Advice / Re: Miramar Subscrptions
« on: October 19, 2022, 06:39:10 PM »
Hi Peter
I have heard nothing further on its future, maybe repeating myself but the family wants to honour current paid subscriptions as best they can and will keep it going for now. They would be aware some such as mine are multi-year but certainly won't be any work on it after uploading the last of Rodgers file updates. After that is uncertain and always risk of any major site failure not being fixed, so has been recommended to me buy the cd that the site advertises to at least have copy of the current records
Cheers

Apologies, I had not passed on the update.
One last list of amendments Roger had started were posted and there will be no further uploads.
The family will maintain the site while they still have subscriptions to see out. For continued use of the database the best option will be to purchase the cd version before the site closes.
Cheers

Help and Advice / Re: Miramar Subscrptions

Hi Dave and community
Sad to confirm Rodger did pass away 25.8 (I'll send you the bereavement details seperately Dave) aged 80, and funeral 2.9.
The matter of continuation is unclear, no clear successor but some well intentioned associates will see how can be maintained. Understand Rodger had a whole room of Lloyds Registers so as well as new stuff, the old stuff was being attended to.
He was quite a gentleman and his endeavours were well supported by his wife Marion, who coincidentally had previously been married to another kiwi shipping historian and stalwart Paddy Leahy, whose shipping notes provide an encyclopaedic New Zealand shipping history from post-ww2 war years to the 1990's when he passed away way too young (56).
I must be one of many to make good use of the Miramar site and the worst case scenario is not wanted to be contemplated, but Rodger's passion will be hard to replicate.
Its a case of awaiting further developments for now and pleasing to note site still functioning as usual.
Cheers
Brent

Former Hambug-Sud UCC Spirit of Hamburg is the second sister to be "Maersk-ised" and will rejoin the fleet at Cartagena as Maersk Wellington replacing Maersk Bintan on NZ/America OC1/Trident service (and Australia).
