Shipping News and information / Re: CSCL / COSCON 22,000 teu ships
« on: April 19, 2017, 06:55:42 AM »
thanks for sharing this with us Rick as I find this very interesting,

Back in 2008 when STX first came up with the concept for a 22,000TEU ship it was envisaged that it would have to be 460m in length with a beam of 60m.
As always the ships designers have found ways to add ever more capacity into the standard 400 x 58m profile. When the first series of Triple E vessels were launched in 2013 I was told by a very reliable source that the second batch 10 vessels from Mayview onward had slightly more capacity due to slight design changes, which perhaps explains why their quoted capacity changed from the initial 18,270 to 18,340TEU.

If this is indeed correct and setting aside any issues that extra length or container height would give the master, planners, ports etc, these ships would not need to be 460m in length. With the arrival of MOL Triumph we now have ships that can load 12 tiers under deck.

The designers would have to weigh up the pros and cons of either loading a 12th tier on deck behind the bridge or increasing the overall length by adding an additional 40' bay both of which would easily increase capacity to just beyond 22,000TEU.

As we have already seen with container ship design perhaps it

Shipping News and information / Re: New ships for Maersk Line
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:55:33 AM »
Soren Skou has said the line will need the capacity of the equivelent 30 ships of 14,000teu between 2017-2019.

None of the new vessels will be under 10,000 TEUs.

this was the biggest un-kept secret in shipping for some time!! and not surprising at all as Evergreen was in danger of falling away from its rivals.

Interesting to see what the COSCO & CSCL agreement will have on this aliance and the fact that when P3 offcialy commences UASC will be out alone.

The estimate of 200-300 containers is correct and makes this the most significant loss of containers overboard in stormy conditions.

Even on a vessel of this size i wouldnt have liked to be onboard at the time.

From what I hear though LGW had been trying to get the Hamburg Sud business for a while and offered very cheap rates to entice them to move.
They were unsuccessful in getting COSCO to move from Felixstowe which was apparently only due to Hutchinson stepping in at the last minute and putting pressure on the Chinese line.

However be under no illusion that any port is fair game, despite Southampton being part owned by DPWorld they have also approached customers that use DPW Southampton offering very low rates, so the gloves are definately with LGW doing all they can to gain trade.

My personal view is that UASC & CSCL will be big targets for LGW as they are due to cooperate on Europe-Far East services shortly with 19,000TEU vessels. Currently UASC vessel share with CMACGM/MSC through Southampton but this will end when P3 starts while CSCL currently use Felixstowe.

Watch this space...............

Shipping News and information / Re: MSC RITA
« on: January 04, 2014, 08:58:23 AM »
Alan,

As Derek said this is probably due to weather delays and problems. MSC Rita & Maersk Saville are both showing due at LGW on 5th & 6th Jan. if the weather situation improves I guess they will revert back to Felixstowe. Diversions & rotation changes are common at times like this, & with LGW being more sheltered than Flx it's not surprising they will pick up some diversions.

Scale Models / Re: Hard to find models: Oil Rigs and Container Ships
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:36:08 PM »
Hi Paul,

Agree there are'nt many at all for  container ships and am not aware of any oil rig models, just not very popular i guess.

However Revell produced a great model of Colombo Express a few years ago which is still readily available on ebay and have a look at the link below:

http://www.amazon.com/Revell-Germany-Colombo-Express-Model/dp/B001VEJ14A

http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/service/cargo/columbo-700-gs/gs-index.html

if you google it there are photos of many good examples, i have not built mine yet but it comes with decals for all the sister vessels in that class so you can chose which one you like.

hope this helps

Hi Alan,

Details of the Condor service are correct it will call Southampton on the import leg and Felixstowe on the return export leg.

With reference to the EEE vessel deployment, P3 will deploy similar sized vessels from all three lines on each all of their combined loops.
Maersk will eventually have 20 of the EEE vessels, while MSC is chartering a trio of 18,000teu vessels. Added to the E-class and CMA CGM & MSC's current 16,000teu vessels the P3 alliance could easily operate 2-3 loops with vessel sizes from 15,500-18,000teu.

What is more interesting is that in MSC's presentation they state 19,000teu vessels perhaps the trio they are chartering will be increased to this size?

The smaller capacity vessels are initially to be deployed on the two loops calling at Southampton but I see that larger vessels will eventually cascade on to these services as the EEE's are delivered.

Interesting times ahead.

Regards
Andrew
