On www.maersk.com you can find a new video showing the new design of 8 ships being delivered in 2024.
Not much ship left. Only hull and boxes. Accomodation block forward and funnel aft. 350 m x 53,5 m.
Really missing the old L-class liners (Luna, Lexa etc.) Those were the days. Niels

Actually Damco was founded in 1905 in the Netherlands by C.W.H.van Dam who purchased a barge to transport goods between Germany and Rotterdam on the river Rhine. This happened one year after A.P. MOLLER started his one-ship enterprise in Copenhagen.
As a supplement to the information stated by MO Roy the further history of Damco includes similar developments of APM Mercantile and SeaLand Logistics finally leading to the single brand DAMCO.

In 2013 Damco headquarters relocated to the current location in The Hague, not far from where
C.W.H. van Dam started his business back in 1905.

Maybe we should also consider a short version of the history of SAFMARINE?

Cheers
Niels

Maersk has today announced that the brands of SAFMARINE and DAMCO cease to exist as brands by the end of 2020.
Instead they will be integrated in the MAERSK brand.

Hello Vlad
Thanks again for your hard work, high quality photos, and detailed
analysis of world wide shipping during a very long time.
Your continued efforts are adding so much value to this site for all members, and
especially - I think - for members like me who feel stuck in the shallow waters
of Northern Europe.
When I am reading you posts/seeing your photos I somehow feel that I am "out of
the shallows now", - at least for a short while (credits/thanks to a certain
female singer)! Niels

Maersk Line apparently to place an order for 4 19,000+ TEU ships by the end of March with an option for two additional ships.
Hyundai Heavy and Samsung Heavy are reported to have visited Copenhagen during last weeks for discussions, and DSME-staff have followed during the last few days.
No exact info as to the capacity of the ships. Some brokers state the range to be between 19,600 and 20,000 TEU, other sources states 20,000+. Delivery from 2018.
Source Tradewinds as quoted by a local website.

Ted, - I don't believe anything at all in this connection. But surely I don't hope that it would happen to whatever kind of ship! And - honestly - I was very much surprised to see a sailor, and a captain, stating that he is "looking forward" to seeing a ship breaking apart.

Maersk has changed alot during the latest years. Much more open and direct in their communication. The PR-hype connected to the 3E - with a consumer-product-like press-show in London - changed the game. Not much more guessing these days, - I guess :-)
The original ML container ship capacity was based upon, as far as I remember, containers  of 14 tonnes, and not on empty container units like the competition used. So apparently ML decided at that time to follow the pack.  Niels

Shipping News and information / More box-giants are coming
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:38:01 AM »
A local maritime site is today quoting Trade Winds: several ship owners are in talks with
shipyards for a total of 30 box ships of more than 20000 TEU. Evergreen, OOCL, and Maersk
Line are mentioned.
Somebody with more details?

Shipping News and information / Re: New ships for Maersk Line
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:20:51 PM »
The above mentioned article with the Soren Skou interview has now been opened. A few more details.
The price tag for the investment will be around USD 15 milliards, and especially the large units of 14000 teu and above will be ordered.
Maersk Line has been investigating the option of ordering ships larger than the 3Es, however, for the time being ships of the 3E-type will be the largest of the ML-fleet. The 3Es have been a challenge for the ports in the network due to the need for larger cranes and supporting terminal logistics.
It is a balance between economy of scale and the flexibility of offering an adequate number of sailings to the customers, says Soren Skou.

Following strong financial results for 2014 Maersk Line has announced that during the next 6 months orders will be placed for a total capacity of 425000 teus. Delivery in 2017-2019.
Today's interview with ML CEO in a local media apparently reveals details as to the sizes of the ships, however access restricted.
