Help and Advice / Need help identifying a (Navy?) ship
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:12:23 PM »
Hello everyone, I was working on the beach today and noticed a tug towing what looked like an old Navy ship up the Chesapeake bay. The AIS data identified the tug and indicated it was heading to Baltimore but nothing on the ship.

The tug can be see on AIS here:

Here's a couple of photos I took of the ship, unfortunately with some distortion due to the distance. Any idea what it might be?

Thanks in advance.

That's probably it then, thanks a bunch. That image was taken with the same model of camera that I use as well, funnily enough.

I thought it might be Coast Guard at first but didn't see any identifications for it, maybe a survey vessel of some kind? It looks like there is some sort of logo on the smoke stacks.

I don't think they wanted people inside the Jolly Rubino, I think they just blew it up so that it would break up faster.

We have stuff like that in the USA, look at the Speigel Grove and the USS Oriskany for example, both cleaned and sunken as reefs for scuba diving. Apparently the Vandenberg is going to share the same fate in 2008.

Its still there. Someone on youtube said that it  "will be torn apart at it's stranded location", but I don't know how reliable that is.

heres some good pics of it I found

I read that 56 containers where washed up on the beach and 47 are not accounted for and are presumed sunken. Sidescan sonar apparently has not found any of the 47 yet. Some of the containers still on the ship appear to be damaged though. This site is a good source of information:

"The weather just got too bad and we couldn't risk the lives of the people attached to the anchor,"
and attaching yourself to the anchor isn't risking your life?
