Shipping News and information / New(?) CMA CGM ships
« on: February 19, 2019, 11:45:39 PM »
CMA CGM has recently returned it's Panama Direct Service to a weekly call starting with today's call of MOZART in Rotterdam, instead of a fortnightly call as it had been for the winter months. They're introducing several ships to it for which I can find no information. Does anyone have any details on CMA CGM HIBISCUS, CMA CGM WARATAH, CMA CGM MULGA, or CMA CGM TAMARIND? Are these newbuildings or renamings?

These are listed as operated vessels both on the CMA CGM website and the Panama Direct schedule distributed daily to customers, stevedores and agents.

I recently purchased this flag on eBay from a shipbreaker in India. With apologies for the bad picture, can anyone identify the line for which this flag was flown?

Trip reports / Southeastern United States Roadtrip Advice
« on: September 19, 2012, 09:39:37 PM »
My girlfriend and I are looking to head to Florida this Christmastime to visit her family, and our plan is currently to drive down from Pennsylvania, stopping in a couple of ports along the way.

I was hoping someone could tell me about Jacksonville, Florida and Savannah, Georgia. Are either any good for shipspotting?

Barge LEWIS J. KUBER and tug JOSEPH H. THOMPSON JR. were removed from drydock at the Erie Shipbuilding yard in Erie, Pennsylvania on 3 July. The KUBER had been converted to an articulated tug barge (having formerly been the steamer BUCKEYE) and the THOMPSON JR. had undergone a $5 million engine and propulsion system replacement.

The THOMPSON JR's barge JOSEPH H. THOMPSON entered drydock later Monday for her five year survey.

See my album for photos of the moves out of drydock. http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/viewcat.php?uid=39

Shipping News and information / OGLEBAY NORTON FLEET SALE
« on: June 04, 2006, 05:08:33 PM »
Various sources report that on Tuesday morning, six ships of the Oglebay Norton fleet, those being the OGLEBAY NORTON, COLUMBIA STAR, FRED R. WHITE JR., ARMCO, MIDDLETOWN, and COURTNEY BURTON will enter a temporary layup for their second fit-out of the season as they undergo a change of ownership from Oglebay Norton to Liberty Steamship Company, a subsidiary of American Steamship Company.

At this time it is unknown what other changes may be in store for the fleet, or if they will receive new names or paint schemes at this time.

Rumors, however, have that Oglebay Norton wants any ships with names that tie to their company (OGLEBAY NORTON, COLUMBIA STAR, FRED R. WHITE JR.) to have a name change immediately.

Oglebay will continue to operate their three "River-Class" vessels: WOLVERINE, EARL W. OGLEBAY, and DAVID Z. NORTON, while they attempt to sell those vessels to an unnamed buyer currently in negotiations with Oglebay.

EDIT:

Reports indicate that the six vessels will receive the following name changes:
COURTNEY BURTON will become AMERICAN FORTITUDE
ARMCO will become AMERICAN VALOR
OGLEBAY NORTON will become AMERICAN INTEGRITY
COLUMBIA STAR  will become AMERICAN CENTURY
FRED R. WHITE JR. will become AMERICAN COURAGE.

These name changes, according to a friend who is connected to American Steamship, will come over the next week. He had no word on a name change for the steamer MIDDLETOWN.

I have received a report that the BUCKEYE, undergoing conversion to a barge at Erie Shipbuilding LLC., in Erie, Pa, will be renamed LEWIS J. KUBER to honor one of her owners, who is a partner in K&K Warehousing.

K&K Warehousing subsidiary Buckeye Holdings LLC owns the BUCKEYE, and K&K is a partner with VanEnkevort Tug & Barge in Erie Shipbuilding.

Shipping News and information / Ferry barge LANSDOWNE successfully raised
« on: February 05, 2006, 02:33:13 AM »
Ferry barge LANSDOWNE, which sank in Erie harbor on Christmas day, was brought to the surface on 2 December.

Thar she blows!
Lansdowne finally resurfaces
By KARA RHODES

The Lansdowne partially popped to the surface Thursday, nearly six weeks after sinking in Presque Isle Bay.

The crew from Cleveland-based Underwater Marine Contractors celebrated with cheers and high-fives on the deck of the barge.

"Right now I'm happy," said Bart Schasfoort, who has led the crew working to float the barge. "This has been a difficult job."

More than 8 feet of water was pumped from the hull of the 324-foot vessel, which is more than 100 years old.

The pumping started early in the morning. At times, more than 15,000 gallons a minute were being sucked from the ship by six Godwin pumps.

Little progress appeared to be occurring to those on the pier throughout the day Thursday, but workers in wet suits watched throughout the day as the pumps cleared water from the cement steps leading into the body of the hull.

Just before 4:30 p.m., the bow of the ship -- the lighter end -- bobbed to the surface. The stern -- heavier because it holds two railroad cars -- was expected to pull free before sunrise.

The barge, which holds two railroad cars, arrived in Erie in 1999. Its owner, Specialty Restaurants Corp. of Anaheim, Calif., had plans to turn it into a floating restaurant.

But that never happened, and the future of the ship was uncertain when it sank on Christmas Day.

Schasfoort said the culprit of the leak appeared to be ventilation ducts in the side of the barge. He said his crew did not discover any large holes that could have caused the vessel to sink.

He said a large storm could have caused the barge to rock hard enough to begin taking on water through the ducts.

"That's our theory," he said. "But we'll obviously be keeping an eye on her."

He said Underwater Marine Contractors won't consider the job complete until the Lansdowne is stable and can show it won't take on more water than a bilge pump can handle.

That way it can be removed from Presque Isle Bay, he said.

"I don't care where they put it," Schasfoort said as he stood on the deck of the ship just minutes after it rose from the muddy depths. "If they're going to turn it into a restaurant, we're all going to go have dinner there."

This was the second attempt to raise the Lansdowne.

Lakeshore Towing Services failed to bring the barge to the surface after more than two weeks of work.
