Shipping News and information / Two new ferries on Italy - Greece routes
« on: October 02, 2009, 03:06:03 PM »
Hallo,

these days, two new ferries take up their duties in the mediterranean. Superfast II http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=977713 is going on the Bari - Igoumenitsa - Patras route, joining Superfast I.

More spectacular, on October 15th the new Minoan Cruise Europa http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/10/Cruise_Europa.jpg/800px- will arrive in Patras for the first time. The largest ferry ever in Greece will go on the Ancona - Igoumenitsa - Patras route. The ship will be italian registered (no more camping on board) with an italian and romanian crew. Rumor has it that Ikarus Palace is already sold, so one of the Ancona ferries will change to the Venice route and the disappointing Zeus palace will probably run on the Venice route as well until the sistership Cruise Olympia is delivered in June 2010.

It remains to be seen what impact the new ferry will have on the competition in the adriatic market and the pricing situation. It will certainly be no small task to continously fill this big boat.

Shipping News and information / QE2 to be scrapped?
« on: February 09, 2009, 10:32:48 AM »
MaritimeMatters reports:

Quote
"February 8: Sources close to Dubai-owned Nakheel, owners of the QE2, indicate the current world financial crisis and stem of tourism to Dubai may have seriously altered or postponed the plans for the conversion of the former Cunarder into a luxury hotel and attraction at the Palm Jumeirah. The original, multi-million USD plans called for a number of radical changes, including: the removal of all lifeboats for a full-beam upperworks superstructure expansion like that done to the SS NORWAY (ex FRANCE) in 1990; addition of a new midsection; rebuilt and squared-off stern for helicopter landings; cylindrical condominium instead of the funnel; gutting of all public rooms and cabins to be replaced with apartments, restaurants and hotel areas; replacement of the machinery with a Broadway-style theater; and removal of the Heritage Trail. With the recent Financial Times reports of Nakheel laying off over 500 employees, purists and fans of the QE2 might have reason to rejoice, at least for now, in that the owners are considering opening the ship "as is", utilizing the current power plant for eating or sleeping on board. Other options would include selling the ship for scrap, although not until public interest in the project has diminished."

Shipping News and information / Nautica a pirates target?
« on: November 30, 2008, 10:05:02 PM »
According to a press release, Oceania Cruises' Nautica was a target of pirates today: http://www.cruisebusiness.com/news.php?u=20081130191300

My question: is it possible for pirates to attack a cruiseship? How would they get on board? And how could a small group of pirates ever expect to control the staff, not mentioning the passengers of a cruiseship?

This doesn

this had to happen: Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL) ist not going to confirm the initial contract for two ships: http://www.cruisebusiness.com/news.php?u=20081110131609. I wonder what will become of all the new cruise ships already firmly contracted or under construction. I am afraid there are more bad news to come.

in December 2007 she was to have been sold to Miami-based Kyma Ship Management. The last picture here shows her moved to Eleusis shipyards. Does this mean that she is finally going to be completed?
