Trip reports / Funny rare lucky cases during ship spotting?
« on: January 19, 2023, 10:01:03 PM »
Something that can be called like that, something hilarious, maybe impossible...

Happened such today. I was walking along the port in my city of Kaliningrad, going to see the offshore tug BALKHAN - suddenly spotted her on Marintetraffic at the local ship repair yard a day earlier - docked at the exact same spot at which I took pics of her almost 15 years ago back in July 2008 (can be found in my first uploads on this site). That tug is usually on-standby at the Lukoil's D-6 oil rig & it's a rare case when it would come all the way to Kaliningrad because the Lukoil's terminal is near Svetlyy.  Besides it's a special ship, since my father sailed on her as 2nd mate back in the years.
So, while walking along the port I was looking at whatever was visible there - our KRUZENSHTERN, SEDOV, some other ships, mostly everything was obstructed, so no point in taking pics there. Suddenly at one certain spot I saw far in the background 4 raised white booms (with distinctive black tips) of deck cranes, everything else of the ship obstructed - it took like 3 seconds for me to figure it out: "OH! That looks like the GREEN CRYSTAL! That reefer I saw back in July 2003...  almost 20 years ago... or well, it could be any of several sisterships, I mean... coooool! 20 years ago & yet now, outta sudden..."
I realized there would be no way of taking pics of her since she was docked in inconvenient place & was very obstructed, so I continued going to see the BALKHAN...

Then at home I remembered to check Marinetraffic what was that reefer anyway - I clicked on it's icon which showed it's indeed the GREEN CRYSTAL!  Lol, could you believe it?  Not only suddenly & finally seeing the same ship I saw 20 years ago (I still have a pencil sketch I drew of her while standing near) but even guessing the correct ship by just it's cranes, I mean it could have been any of her sisterships.

Help and Advice / Help recognize ship
« on: November 28, 2018, 09:21:39 AM »
Hi!  Was searching for GA plans of tugs & came across this one https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f3/b1/95/f3b1959bff15863a7dea625cf70b51e6.jpg - looks like a compact "cute" tug, but I can't find any more infos about it. Is it a some existing/existed tug or just one of many unreleased projects? Searching by image brings only a couple more of the same GA plan from Pinterest.  A closer look, on the funnel there's a logo - I kinda recall seeing such though...

Shipping News and information / Handling tweendeck covers
« on: January 10, 2018, 06:13:02 PM »
I was looking at the DEO VOLENTE & OCEANIC (both are Hartman vessels) general arrangement plans & I'm wondering how are the tweendeck hatch covers are opened/closed/stacked.  For first vessel I read that it's gantry hatch cover crane can handle both hatch covers & tweendeck covers, second vessel also uses it's gantry crane to do the same.  And not just that, but same gantry crane can also rotate tweendeck covers on 90 degrees & stack one on another forming a bulkhead.  I looked at gantry cranes for those 2 vessels on photos & how it's drawn on GA plans & by the looks of it, it can only handle the upper hatch covers.   The crane's spreader has 4 hooks & connects to covers at their sides, it also can't change it's width.  Yet the the hold is narrower than the spreader which can't be fully lowered to reach the tweendeck.
Also, from those ships' GA plans I think the tweendeck covers can only be stacked within the hold...  or the same gantry crane can somehow lift them & stack on the upper deck?
Could someone shine a light on this?

Regards,
Denis

I wonder, why do some general cargo ships with aft accommodation have 1 of the 2 rotating radar antennas on top of the foremast instead of having both above the bridge?   Ships like Deo Volente, Arctic Rock, Marietje Deborah & etc.  What are the rules for placing those radar antennas?  I would guess, even if placing it on foremast, it still should be above the bridge level...  Though I have seen some big ferries having a rotating radar on the front of accommodation below the bridge.  ???

Another question regarding placing the magneting compass above the bridge on cargo ships.  Sometimes it can be seen standing on some platform above the bridge, often just on deck above the bridge - why's that?  What if there's an obstruction behind it like a tall funnel or something?

Scale Models / Decals on scratch built models
« on: December 13, 2016, 11:34:16 AM »
How do you do custom decals for your scale models?  You know, all those accurate big & small writings on hull & everywhere - ship name, port of registry, numbers, marks, signs, etc. - how do you get them there?  Back then all I could do was writing everything on model by hand with a very thin/sharp brush or needle - it was nice, but quality was far from accurate.  Would like to hear your technicues/tips/suggestions.

Shipping News and information / IMOs
« on: March 04, 2016, 07:57:07 PM »
I'm curious about this for a long time...
Ships that were built in the 50s have IMO starting with 5, 60s - with 6, 70s - with 7, etc.  That's correct for most of cases & for them if the IMO starts with, say, 73 - then it's safe to say the vessel was built in 1973 or somewhen around that year.  Also correct for most of cases.  Ships built in the 90s have IMO starting with 9... I thought long ago that for those that will be built in 2000s the IMO will start from 0, for those built in 2010s - from 1, etc. Of course, that's wrong!  Even for a 2016 built ship (not a yacht) it would still start with 9.  But there are only 7 digits in IMO & what if eventually there are/were so many vessels built since the 90s, that whatever 7 digit number starting with 9 you can come up with - it's already taken.  What then?  ???  Taking IMOs from long ago of vessels that no longer exist? Start IMOs from 0-4? Introduce 8 digit IMOs?

Shipping News and information / UK-built ships in recent decades?
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:11:37 PM »
I wonder, are there any short-sea general cargo ships that were built in UK in the past 15-20 years? I notice it's mostly Chinese, Dutch & German built ones, but if it's about UK, those are mostly from the 80s & earlier.

Shipping News and information / Anyone regognizes this ship?
« on: October 10, 2015, 10:28:38 PM »
Some long ago I saw a cargo ship on a calender - by a sketch I made that day, she was probably less than 130 m in overall length, mast & deck crane on forecastle, 2 holds, Stuelcken derrick in the middle between them, another deck crane in front of the superstructure. It looked & was colored like this:

Shipping News and information / How did you find Shipspotting.com?
« on: August 30, 2015, 01:10:37 PM »
Out of interest/curiosity, how did either of you find this site in the first place & what made you to come here over & over?  ;D

For me it was in autumn 2007 when I finally got my first (although slow) internet & went on searching for various ship pics I could find, saving the interesting ones in case I'd like to try modeling some. I was mostly coming across some small sites, writing down the url's of good ones. Of course, main thing was searching for photos of all ships I could remember seeing in Kaliningrad over the years.  That was until I googled for OOSTERSCHELDEBORG which I saw in 2003 & in results there was a photo (no longer available) from here, so after browsing around a little I understood this site has more ships than I could view in one go compared to those little private sites! So I was coming again & again, mostly as a lurker & mostly checking the Heavy Lift Vessels & Floating Cranes categories since those were of utmost interest to me.  Eventually in July 2008 I got my camera, could make pics & finally registered here...

Denis

Site related news, functions and modules / Ship infos partly gone...
« on: July 13, 2015, 11:50:44 PM »
Noticed recently that for many ships the Vessel Identification, Technical Data, Additional Information modules showing nothing like if the IMO is wrong, while AIS Information & Port History are still there.
Something should be done about it, because it's teasing like if the IMO is incorrect, especially if it's one or few photos from one member of a ship that no longer exists.

What's the point/purpose of that section of the site?  Apart from being slightly informative, it's just another static page, clogged with "boring" cruise ships!
