Shipping News and information / Cruise ship sorties

Can anyone explain why Queen Victoria and Ventura left Southampton yesterday morning and raced down the Channel as far as Devon, before returning this morning and mooring up again in Southampton? The liner equivalent of taking your dog for a walk.

Shipping News and information / Wes Carina V Prawle Point
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:09:03 AM »
Looking at the track of Wes Carina on Marine Traffic, it looks as if she was within 2km of alliding with Prawle Point at 0800 this morning. Or is this a normal Costa Concordia type drive by, I realise how picturesque the scenery is? I was brought up mucking about in small boats there, and know how hard the rocks are.

I read with fascination that the new Vittoria Shipyard Interceptor 43 patrol craft has four Mercury outboards, the performance of which is 'independent of altitude'!

Shipping News and information / Express 1

I am sure that someone knows the story behind why livestock carrier Express 1 ex Mahmoud express, was happily sailing west down the channel, when it suddenly changed course for Fowey today. Now anchored a kilometer off Fowey, I cannot think it is a likely vessel to nip in for a cargo of china clay. In fact pictures suggest that it is a heap of junk. What is going on!

Shipping News and information / Scilly supply ship
« on: March 05, 2014, 02:56:39 PM »
Small coaster Bourhoui seems to be doing a Plymouth Victoria Wharf to Scilly Isles shuttle. Is there something wrong with the normal Scilly supply ship Gry Maritha, or perhaps the harbour at Penzance?

Shipping News and information / Worlds largest ship off Falmouth
« on: June 30, 2013, 01:12:37 PM »
TI Europe, fresh from repaint at Brest, is currently moored off Falmouth.
Apparently alongside is Portland based bunkering tanker Paxoi. Wonder why TI Europe did not get bunkers at Brest, if, indeed, that is what she is doing, or use the local facilities. And where is she off to next?

Shipping News and information / Open hold container vessels
« on: June 30, 2013, 08:17:38 AM »
I have seen the occasional reference to container ships designed with no hatch covers. An example is the pair of Wagonborg ships Reggeborg and Reestborg now converted to livestock carriers, but these are forward bridge designs that have a certain amount of protection for the open aft holds.
What stops the waves filling the open holds in rough weather? I can see the great advantage in loading, but it does not sound very safe. How common is it, and do larger vessels have the same feature?
