Help and Advice / Re: Stolen photos on Instagram
« on: September 21, 2020, 12:46:11 PM »
Indeed, most people wouldn't notice, which is why I spent time on it.  As I said, I emailed all those members whose photos I identified on that, now deleted, account. Of those all but one didn't bother to reply, even to say that they didn't care.

David, I would say members didn't care (although some won't). It's more a case of trying to push water up a hill in fighting copyright/'stolen images' with the social media giants. If this latest 15 year old has his account closed then he simply opens a new account a few minutes later unless Instagram block his ISP and even then he can simply move to a mobile devise. So until the big boys in the industry start taking this seriously then I fear all your hard work is simply wasted and I know you will have plenty of serious research to occupy your time with. I have been in a number of Facebook groups where I have raised the issue of copyright with both the group administrators, Facebook, and the individuals who have posted what I know to be a copyright image and frankly the responses have ranged from rudeness to indifference so I am afraid it is the very negative side to the world of modern technology/communications that we have to live with and perhaps any future efforts to track down the image stealers should to be left to the individual owners of the original and make that crystal clear. Just a thought.

Home Office confirm that one (Not named - Seeker?) is now on patrol although news report shows a photo of Vigilant, maybe a stock photo they used.

A Photo (blurred) also shows 'migrants' on the deck of what looks like a tug.

Help and Advice / Belfast - Any photographic viewpoints?
« on: December 15, 2017, 12:12:26 PM »
Will be visiting Belfast next February and staying in the "Titanic Quarter" (basically around the old H&W shipyard). Have studied photographs and google maps and there appear to be some vantage points for viewing/photographing anything in the port.

Anyone local or those that have tried offer any guidance as to good spots to spot from please?

Many thanks in advance

Shipping News and information / Re: photographing in constanta romania

Peter,

A search of the internet has thrown up many images of a very large and industrial port, from the images I looked at it seems public access is non-existent but that was just from the images - local knowledge is a wonderful thing!

This first one shows one (the only one?) tug berth, the 2 on the right look very familiar, an ex Tees and an ex Alexandra Towing - a former Sun?

The second image shows more of the breakwater but doesn't look pedestrian friendly! The photo's appear to have been taken from a cruise ship so maybe that's a clue that might give you public access?

Facinating research!

Andrew

Trip reports / Re: Leith Docks
« on: August 01, 2017, 08:42:10 PM »
Hi Mike, yes they normally do.

If you go into the Shopping Centre in Leith (Ocean Terminal) and up to the 2nd floor where the restaurants are there is an open air walkway that runs alongside so you should be looking slightly down on her as she should be moored to the left with Britannia on the right as you come out onto the walkway.

If you want to get photo's of any merchant ships then I think the 2nd or 3rd floor of the Multi story car park looks down onto the active commercial area (if you using public transport you can still get up into the car park no problem).

Your other alternative is to head for an ASDA superstore on Sandpiper Drive - Postcode EH6 6NX and that is on the opposite side of the dock looking East towards the Ocean Terminal. There were some laid-up Offshore vessels there last time I was down so that could be your landmark when looking west from the terminal - although I'm not 100% they still there. -

Good luck - not the best time to be in Edinburgh as the festival is about to kick off so expect crowds and heavy rain!!!!

But enjoy anyway.

Help and Advice / Re: Grangemouth viewpoint
« on: July 13, 2017, 08:57:04 PM »
Chris,

I re-posted your question on a railforum up here (most of us have in interest in more than one form of transport!) and from my own (limited) knowledge and local people on the ground said a resounding NO as there are security gates on the roads you have highlighted. Sorry! Our best advice is to view from either North or South Queensferry or if you have a head for heights the cycle/pathway on the existing Forth Road Bridge. Traffic into Grangemouth is not heavy so if you have transport you will have to sit in car and watch AIS for movements.

If you want to get on the water there is the boat from South Queensferry to Inchcolm Island (worth doing). You could get the earliest ferry and spend day on Island and you will see anything that is moving plus have the Forth Rail Bridge as a backdrop. The ferry also passes 2 major oil/gas terminals so you may get lucky with a movement.

Hope this helps, any questions please let us know and do our best to provide an answer.

ps. If you are North of the Border then very worthwhile going up to Aberdeen as it's a very (by modern security standards anyway) open port with plenty of viewpoints plus harbour boat tours too.

Shipping News and information / HMS Queen Elizabeth in Invergordon
« on: July 08, 2017, 11:15:02 PM »
HMS Queen Elizabeth currently (Saturday evening 08/07)moored at Invergordon.

Good to see the navy back in town although technically not RN yet as still flying Red Ensign. Surprised to see a clear AIS signal from her, perhaps the Navy are publicity aware and are happy for us to know where she is (for now).

Hello Tim, no insult was intended re: local's and cameras, that's why I added a  ;)

As you say it's a problem anywhere, I tend to keep my camera in it's case and then put that in a supermarket carrier bag when I'm somewhere I don't know (or do know!)

Ted Ingham is your man that should be able to advice (see link to his profile).

Last time I was in Sheerness (a good few years ago) inbound traffic was reasonably close to sheerness beach - at the port end - to get reasonable shots. Just keep your camera equipment safe out of sight from the locals...;-)

Peel Ports do not publish expected arrivals/departures so it's down to watching AIS to see what's moving I'm afraid.

I have no idea how safe Jeddah is for ship spotters taking photo's in a restricted port area, I suspect not very unless you are crew on a ship so the chances of you finding an enthusiast willing to risk it must be very small.

Have you tried doing a search on here for anyone local? In the top right corner of the main page you will see a SEARCH box. If you select the 'Advance search' option and then select 'Jordan' as the country that will bring up photo's that have been taken and the name of the photographer; you can contact the relevant member via this page.

Good luck.

Farewell Duchess M, welcome back the "plastic peril"  :(

Certainly capable of providing a 'lively' crossing if caught in the wake of anything bigger!
