The ship is now upright (low in the water to rest on the purpose made bed). This was completed 4am Giglio time. The Parbuckling Project officials held a press conferrence to say that the operation was a success and had gone to plan. There has been no pollution from the ship and they will monitor and stabilize the ship's position. Preparation for the next stage will then occur.

Watching this on the Reuters live feed, very interesting!

Here is a video animation showing the first three phases, watch on HD...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qPf6bGarcK0

They say that in another 3-4 hours the ship should be upright if all goes smoothly.

Thanx for that :), I'm still continuing to follow the progress.

Its been a while since I've been on the forum, but the ASV Pioneer is clearly visible next to Concordia now.

There is now a large barge with what appears to be a hoisting crane on it (and another crane)...please excuse my lack of vessel identification skills here ;-) Someone more in the know might be able to identify it.

Seen here...

I wonder if they are getting close to the actual 'righting' of the stricken ship?

Unfortunately the closeup webcam belonging to www.thelastsalute.eu has been pulled due to permission problems and continuity for their movie making. Here it is in their own words...

Damn :( that was a good webcam

Many thanx for that  :)

Thanks for the new webcam link, Mallorcasailor  :)

Unfortunately, the close-up webcam seems to longer be working - http://camera.thelastsalute.eu/webcam.jpg , so it might be harder to see some of the progression with the Gilgio Port one only http://www.giglionews.it/2010022440919/webcam/isola-del-giglio/webcam-giglio-porto-panoramica.html

It will be interesting to see how the work unfolds.

Well done on the shots, in such difficult conditions, thanx very much for those. Your summer looks like our winter, here 'Downunder' ;)

I already mentioned about the visual compression that zoom lenses do, and yes I agree, they are well composed photos.

I have been watching the cruise ship webcams everyday and unfortunately missed seeing this.

I agree, risky, allowances should always be made for the unforeseen (engine failure, inaccurate readings, inaccurate maps) If I'm reading the charts accurately, they appeared to have deviated from the recommended course on an earlier occasion in order to get closer to the promontory and the 'castle', and this time they went even closer. (Allowing for the fact that the telephoto lenses of the camera compress the scene, making things seem closer than they might have been)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
