Shipping News and information / Re: US visitor

Bob, Allan: It seems the Koreans are due to depart today (14th). Given that most ships have their names displayed somewhere on them, I wonder why HMQM Portsmouth insists on naming them all "Foreign warship". In the case of the Koreans today, they are listed as "ROKS Foreign Warship". So, the Republic of South Korea is foreign? Well I never!

We see this quite often "no UK yards tendered". Fincantieri and Cammell Laird came together in a joint venture with an offer to build the ships at Birkenhead and Peter Luff MP showed his ignorance by claiming "we don't build tankers in the UK" and tell the Fincantieri/Lairds JV to sod off, we are not listening. I wonder if this idiot ever thought who had built all the RFA vessels up to that time? So, the reason no UK yards tendered was because they were told not to as a S. Korean yard was given "preferred bidder" status before the process began.
By the way, when the current defence idiot, Michael Fallon, made the announcement on the BBC on 6th September, he stated "we need to build ships for export. We haven't built a ship for export for 40 years". Really?

Ted,
Here is an interesting article, written by a US Navy officer. It basically confirms what you are saying. A good read:

Charlie, Equasis shows it as Longwave since 1 June 2017.

Sadly, there are reports that 10 US sailors are missing.

Thanks Stan for putting me right!
I must get some new glasses.

I am a bit puzzled. Marine Traffic shows she sailed from Hamburg, not Liverpool and is currently (22:40 BST) in the English Channel, just off Hastings.

Shipping News and information / Re: HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH
« on: August 16, 2017, 03:57:34 PM »
It was definitely not a day to get excited over. Yes, being a mug, I went, arriving at Clarence Pier around 05:30, intending to make the left turn along the sea front. Park and walk was OK until the time came to leave: 50 minutes from the car park at the Clarence Pier end of the prom to joining the M27!
Here's a question for someone; Why is it being referred to as HMS Queen Elizabeth? Surely, it becomes HMS when it is commissioned? It was flying a blue ensign (government service) indicating the contractors are still very much in charge. When the previous carriers were decommissioned, the HMS was removed from the names pretty quickly.
By the way Allan, I don't know if you made it down there today but when I saw the numbers of yachts and small boats, I had visions of you tearing your hair out, shouting epithets etc!

Shipping News and information / Re: Archer class training vessels
« on: April 25, 2017, 02:55:19 PM »
I believe they do this perhaps every 2 years or so. Whatever the reason, it was a great sight to see as they all trooped out of Portsmouth. I haven't counted them all yet but I think 2 or 3 didn't make it back to Portsmouth, possibly having headed back to their home ports. At least 1 disappeared West down the Solent, possibly to Southampton, possibly to the Needles.

The BBC have an interesting article on the scrapping of relatively young vessels here:

Doesn't that seem an odd way to go, via Hawaii?
What next, overland from Los Angeles to New York?

QHM now confirms 09:00 departure for Ereclea destination lurking around Spithead. Illustrious on the move at 09:30 with 5 tugs (including Lomax from Soton). Oh, and the weather is exactly as could have been predicted!

Phil, I think you may be missing the point here.
The web site referred to in this thread seems to collect all of their photos from shipspotting. Then they have the brass neck to say users are free to use these photos for commercial purposes. Also, one has to assume they generate revenue from the adverts on their page. As I understand this, it means they get paid for each click on each advert on their site.
And that boils down to someone else making money off your work. How ethical is that?
So, the point is not sharing your photos with others but having your photo generate income for someone else and none for you.

Shipping News and information / Re: R F A ORANGELEAF
« on: February 26, 2016, 09:23:47 AM »
An update on Orangeleaf; she was dragged out of Birkenhead docks on 24th February by the tug Diavlos Pride, and is now en route to Aliaga.
Unfortunately, I chose that day to return home from Merseyside so missed it!
Here's a pic taken by someone else:

It seems to me, the problem has been observed and reported to the technical person responsible for investigating and/or fixing it.
So what value to the whole thing is added by more and more people adding their complaints?
None! Just let the man get on with it and I am sure all will be well when he finds the root cause.
And, if I was he, I would be taking my weekend time off with family etc seriously and would begin looking at it tomorrow. For him, it is work.
