Another attempt is set for the next tide at 05H30 AM on 18 Oct 2015, using more powerful tugs already on the scene.

PRINCESS DAPHNE did not belong to any kind of receivership. She was ownwd by Golden Laurel Maritime Inc (2008-2014),and managed by Arcalia Shipping / Classic International Cruises. After an agreement between the bank Montepio Geral (lisbon) and Classic International Cruises (the two sons of Georgios Potamianos, Alex and Emilios Potamianos)they retained ownership of this ship and got from the got 3 million euros in cash. Unfortunately for a number of reasons I am not going to specify here, they were unable to return this fine ship to service, so she has just been sold to breakers.

Hello,

I am doing an article on the history of the Swedish passenger and cargo liner STOCKHOLM built in Gotenburg 1944-1948 and I have been unable to find her original call sign letters (1948-1960). I have a copy of Lloyd's Register 1947-48 which already shows an entry on te STOCKHOLM but at publication date she had not yet been registered, so no Call Sign.

Can someone having at hand a copy of Lloyds Registers books on this period check this information, please? By the way, anyone knows the date this ship's keel was laid down somewhere in 1945?

Many thanks

Lu

That makes me remember an old practice of "selling a ship to the insurance". She may head now to Aliaga. So many fine passenger ships have ended just this way, I particularly remember the magnificent PALLAS ATHENA..., but the list is long.

Sad to see the former CUNARD COUNTESS burning.

All five former ships of Classic International Cruises will be back in cruise service in the near future.
FUNCHAL saw her refit resumed as soon as new owners finished purchase of the ships from bank Montepio Geral.
Four owning companies have been set up in MaDEIRA Island, Portugal, on 11 January, each one to take ownership of a single ship. Meanwhile a new cruise management company called PORTUSCALE CRUISES has been established on 27 February and an office has opened already in downtown Lisbon with several former staff of CIC back at work.
ARION which had been detained last September in Kotor and later moved to nearby Montenegro port of Bar was realeased in March and left Bar on 9 March sailig for Lisbon with a crew of 22 men. She arrived Lisbon on 15 March and a refit is due to start this week in Lisbon.
Captain Filipe who brought ARION home is now on his way to Marseilles to bring ATHENA to Lisbon as soon as possible and PRINCESS DANAE also has already a Portuguese crew onboard and is due in Lisbon soon.
ATHENA is already contracted for a season of charter cruising from the Black Sea for the Russian market under the name ASTORIA. She will operate in the Black Sea and Mediterranean (East Med and the Adriatic) from July until late November.
New owner Mr. Rui Alegre is considering to rename all ships with Portuguese names except FUNCHAL. So let's wait and see how things evolve, but so far it could not have been better news four this group of classics.
Mr. George Potamianos sons, Emilios and Alexander Potamianos kept the PRINCESS DAPHNE under their own ownership and they got the ship also from bank Montepio free of debts, so let's see if they will be able to follow their Father footsteps and are able to develop their business the way George Potamiaos did after he purchased FUNCHAL in Lisbon in August 1985.

A lot has been done already in terms of modernizing the FUNCHAL. First the asbestos were removed as the old cabins were dismantled. During four weeks in drydock at the Navalrocha yard in February and March 2011 120 tons of steel were replaced in the hull and decks. Glass on all windows has been replaced also. Most items required to finish the refit are already at hand, the main engines and auxiliaries are refitted like new, etc...

Let's hope this story is having a happy end...

PRINCESS DAPHNE remains under the ownership of the Potamianos brothers Alexander and Emilios following a recent deal with bank Montepio Geral, CIC main creditor. They closed the former CIC Lisbon office but have retained the company's office in Piraeus. They got also several million euros from the bank with P DAPHNE...
