Trip reports / Istanbul
« on: June 11, 2017, 07:05:42 PM »
I just went back from a one week shipspotting trip to Istanbul, which is in my opinion still one of the best spotting places.
I staid in a hotel at Sirkeci, so that I could reach easily either the spotting place on the European side (Saray Burnu) via the Gulhane Park and on the Asian Side (

Help and Advice / shipspotting in South East Asia
« on: December 09, 2012, 09:08:38 AM »
Hi shipspotting friends,
I am going on a cruise from Bangkok (port Laem Chabang, outside the Chao Praya river) to severak ports, as Penang, Port Klang, Singapore, Muara and Ho Chi Minh (port Phu My outside Mekong river).
Does anyone has experience with shipspotting possibilities in those ports, especially Singapore and Port Klang ?
Singapore offers boat tours, are they good to watch some of the anchorage ?
At Port Klang the port at Pilau Lamut on a island somewhat far form the city.
Kind regards from cold an snowy Bavaria

Shipping News and information / New cruise vessel France
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:24:59 PM »
Last week-end I have been visiting an excellent exhibition about the passenger vessel France 1962 in Musee de la Marine, Paris Trocadero. Within this exhibition I found an advertisement for a project of new cruise vessel France, which should become an absolutely luxury vessel for 600 - 700 passengers with a gross tonnage of 60.000 to, 260 m length and 30 m breadth.
The design is somewhat futuristic and reminds only a bit on the old France of 1962.
I am not sure, if the project is already fixed, but you already can buy shares of the vessel concerning to the hompage, which should be paid in 2014.
Detailed informations, an animation film and photos of the planned design you find at the following homepage.

Congrats to Jon and Stan !
To reduce your own rubbish is good for the site, and much better as to delete everything.
I wished I would have the time to do that with my photos.
Kind regards form frosty Bavaria

Hi all,
I was not follwing the forums during the last weeks because of lack of time.
Let me just give my thoughts as one of the oldest members on this site (since 6 Years) about the whole discussion.
The site was first a sort of hobby site of Thomas Pinas with only a few 100 of photos on it, when I discovered it in mid 2004. It was besides a few others the only site, where everyone could post its own photos just for fun. As I had not time to create my own homepage I just started to to post my photos. During the next years lots of other shiplovers got attracted by this site and it grew by members and photos. Some silly guys posted really rubbish, anything, but not a ship photos. For this the admin team was born. During a long time Derek Sands, whom I really can call a good friend was managing the admin team. He has the real spirit to create a balance inbetween rules and chaos and always was friendly. But with a rising always a change is coming. And the more people stick in some way together the bigger are the possible communication problems. There are always guys who wants to show theirselves and making rumours or create discussion. So it became more and more impossible to get an agreement on things. There were hardliners, who wanted to restrict the site to only the best quality photos and there were others who wanted to allow everything. The middle way to make everyone happy was impossible and will it be forever. But Derek and his team tried it (voluntarly) as best as they could. For this I joined the admin team in 2009. And I am doing everything besides a hard work in a larger company.
I did not like the change of the "site sponsors" and the way Thomas "sold" the site. But I still liked the site with all its possibilities and all the friends I have found and met during all those years. For this I stayed and will stay with that site. Not everything is Ok on this site (it cannot be as we are too many members with too different opinions), E.g. I also would have liked the considered for deletion category be rested in the public. But still the site is very attractive for me, much more attractive than others sites like this one of Klaus e.g. who is making with every post publicity for his site (why he needs on every message a comment, that someone should join his site?).
But this site is still the site of the shipsotting members, first of all of the active members, who contribute in photos, thoughts and informations about shipping, despite a sponsor, who is using the site, supporting his products.
And I do not see any reason to leave the site because a few things I do not like on the site.
I hope many of you fell like me, which should not prevent us from discussing friendly, how we can improve with the site. You always can improve.
Have a nice an peaceful Christmas time

Trip reports / Re: Need Infomation for Shipspotting in Antwerpen
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:10:06 PM »
Hi Galadriel,
I go to Antwerp every year since 1988.
In addition to the informations of the others I go as well with the car through the port despite the fact that more and more of the locks are closed now (in 1988 everything was open except on container berth).  But I think about 50% of the ship in the port are "drivable". Some of the Schelde container berth you can see from the road (at Barentdrechtlock and at Lillo).
Anyway I wish you good luck and nice shipspotting.

Help and Advice / Re: Deletions
« on: July 01, 2010, 06:03:17 PM »
Hi all,
I am admin of the categories Wrecks and Relics and Scrapyard ships.
During the last days I was without internet, but during my revisions I deleted only very very awful shots as these categories contain rare views of ships.
Should anyone feel that I am to strict, please let me know.
Concerning the deletion of bad admin photos. Yes there may be some, e.g. posted before the rules has achieved. But it is not fair to condemn us because we are not deleting our bad photos.
Anyway, if I find a bad one of mine old photos,  I delete it for myself and I never complained, when my colleagues found one of my bad ones. But I simply do not have the time to go through all of my posted photos to sort out the bad ones. Shipspotting is my hobby and not my job.
And the interpretation of what is good or bad is always subjective, for that we are humans and no roboters. I prefer e.g. an unsharp photo of and old freighter to a new photo of QE 2, which has been posted several hundred times (subjective view).
For this different opinions, if a photo should be deleted or not, are quite normal. Anyway, in my categories, I am willing to discuss it, just EMAIL me

Trip reports / Re: spotting is an (almost) lethal hobby
« on: May 29, 2010, 07:49:53 AM »
Hi Stan,
funny video, but to be honest, also shipspotting is a risky hobby as well. I heard from a shiplover, who was in jail because he took pictures in forbidden areas.
I was surprised while taking a shot by a huge wave with the legs completey wet after the wave. And at Ghent I went back to get the full ship on the photo and trapped in a whole injuring heavily my knee.
But I am still alive luckily.
