Shipping News and information / Re: CARIBOU / SMALLWOOD

I just picked up the paper and saw the article and picture on the front page. Still hard to believe they're being scrapped. They look surreal sitting on the beach side by side like that. Seems like yesterday I was just a kid going on board.

Since the main subject of all these topics is Marine Atlantic, it might be best to just have one thread called "Marine Atlantic" where we can discuss everything going on.
For me personally the ferries are a big interest of mine, and I check the forums regularly to hear of any news. Hard to hear anything otherwise when you're across the province.

Despite everything here boys...I'd buy ya's all a pint wether ya wanted to sit at the same table as me or not...

That would make for an interesting conversation. Perhaps the staff would ask us to stop talking too LOL

How recent did this happen? I see the Vision's track on Marine Traffic showing her heading back to NS, but that was on the 25. Nothing on the regular news I check.

Let's hope that whatever incident occurred the people involved are ok.

I saw on Marine Traffic that the Oceanex vessel CABOT is making her to way to Las Palmas in Spain. Does anyone know if Oceanex has another vessel lined up to run in her place while she's out? Or is the SANDERLING back in service freeing up THEBELAND to take over the run from CABOT?

I agree, terrific shot!
Amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do for a ship :)

Terrific photos Jarrod. Fingers crossed she and the Smallwood will still be there when I come across the island this summer.

Cheers

Could be, I just assumed that she would be back by April considering she's been out of service some time now.

the first scheduled crossing for Highlanders is on the 21st of April.

http://www.marine-atlantic.ca/en/schedule/pabnsy1.asp?cboRoute=NSPB&cboDay=21&cboMonth=Apr&cboYear=11&button=Show

Atlantic Vision is not listed after that date until the summer, so she will be backup or in layup.

She'll probably undergo routine maintenance and preparation for working the Argentia run this summer. Ericson will be back by then so PAB will still have three ships running.

Great shots of the two of them together. Also good to hear that the Blue is already performing well on the Gulf run.

A post by Mike Whitty in the Blue Puttees discussion said that she went back to North Sydney for a crew change.
I guess it doesn't hurt to give the crew all the training they can get before she's put into service. Perhaps they were doing some emergency drill training en route or something.

Has she been sold or just being moved to a new spot for the time being?

They must have been dredging the harbour behind the scenes. They had to dredge Port Aux Basques when the Carson started running didn't they?
I always thought the problem with Argentia was the ferry terminal didn't have a ramp to the upper car deck. Is that still the case or has some of that money Marine Atlantic got gone into adding an upper ramp?
Buddy in the desk next to me at work had to go to Argentia today. I should have asked him to look and see what's on the go.

Agreed Dean. Not everyone leaving Newfoundland will be headed as far as Toronto. And my own personal choice, if I was driving home to NS for vacation, I'd rather save the wear and tear on my car.
