The BBC Box arrives Shanghai, China on board the  "Copenhagen Express"
wonder what she'll get this time, with the current world financial climate looking a bit dull to say the least and world trade taking a blow she might come home empty.   :-(  lets see.

Cheers, Alan.

Afternoon of the 28th Sept 2008.

The BBC Box already left Southampton on the 24th Sept with The Whisky on board and is at this moment off the Algerian coast bound for the Suez canal and onward to china, she is onboard the container vessel "Copenhagen Express"

Just to confirm, the vessel alongside is the "Ocean Harvest" PD198, the vessel capsized is the "Harvester" PD98, they are sister ships due for delivery around March 2008 to Peterhead.

The "Harvester" capsized not long after coming off the slipway so maybe the sea cocks had been left open.

Looks like its the new PD98 "Harvester" for Peterhead, Scotland to replace the old "Harvester" PD98 which was hit by a supply vessel and sank in 2005.

this is my guess from looking at Norwegian forums about the incident.

Some more info on the Black Sea.

ALERT>> Five ships sunk in Kerch Straight storm - 23 people missing>> Russian tanker M/V Vologneft-139 tore apart and sank in heavy weather spilling 1,300 tonnes of fuel oil into the Black Sea on Nov. 11. Four other cargo ships including three carrying sulphur also sank as winds of up to 108 kilometres (67 miles) an hour battered the Kerch Strait separating the Black Sea from the Sea of Azov. Forty vessels were evacuated from Kavkaz, a busy Russian commercial port some 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) south of Moscow, officials said. Ten others were forced to stay in the port because of the storm. Some 300 kilometres further west, high winds sank another cargo ship with 17 sailors on board. Two were rescued and 15 crew reported missing. M/V Kovel, carrying sulphur, sank after hitting another Russian cargo ship, M/V Volnogorsk, which also sunk in the five-metre high waves and raging winds.

Report taken from the "The Cargo Letter" website.

A terrible disaster for a great old ship, hopefully with luck, a lot of time and ofcourse money they can eventually get her back to her former glory but i suspect it will not be very easy.
I hope they catch those who did this if in fact it was a malicious act.

Shipping News and information / Re: A New Use for Containers
« on: May 04, 2007, 07:49:46 PM »
Hi Steve,

That's an interesting story on the containers as houses.
A lot of you in the Offshore might also be aware that for many years now containers have been used by service companys working in the offshore industry as offices, laboratories, workshops, control rooms, etc etc, I've seen them very nicely fitted out with windows, air conditioning and some are very well sealed when used as labs. there must be thousands of things that they have and can be used for i expect and being less expensive and quite mobile as far as transporting them goes its a very good option.

Cheers, Alan.

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the link to the "ShetlandToday" report, seems that  an unfortunate sequence of events including that of the engine room and the Rigs advice on the operation has led to this serious tragedy although i hope that statements from all the parties involved on how the events took place will help in possibly preventing this happening again.

My condolences to the family and friends of those who died in this tragedy.

Regards, Alan.

Shipping News and information / Re: Offshore Support Vessel Capsizes
« on: April 12, 2007, 10:26:12 PM »
Latest at 23.00hrs on Sky News.

Michael Mulford at RAF Kinloss said that it looks like they will have to take off the Rigs crew of 99 as the Bourbon Dolphin is still attached to the Rig and it may cause problems for the Rig overnight, they are still continuing to try and recover the crew members still on the vessel.

A very sad day for those crew members who have died and hopefully they can find the missing crew members tonight.

Regards Alan.

Latest on Sky News at 20.00hrs was that the vessels upturned hull was still alongside the rig or platform and that rescue services were picking up divers from Faslane and taking them to the scene to try and rescue the remaining 5 sailors who they say might still be alive within the vessels hull, they reported that there had been 15 on board the vessel and that 10 people had been rescued so far.
