Shipping News and information / Help in the ship identification
« on: January 23, 2013, 12:08:16 PM »
Gents, some divers in Russia raised in 2002-2004 ship's bell with "Die Woche" name on it:

It was raised approximately here:
http://goo.gl/maps/ArZTK
(Cola peninsula, near Russian-Norwegian border)
Looks like this was some german ship. Probable size maybe around 200-400 BRT.
There is no any other signs/marks on this bell. They tried to get information from Hamburg maritime museum, but got only formal reply.
Any idea how to identify the vessel?

Thanks for links, Robbie! Strange that this is interim report - how they could judge them without final one?

I heard that they have well equipped harbour control there, i think they should also watch around a bit, to avoid such accident.

Usially warships should be equipped by special AIS transponders, which is possible to switch to silent/encrypted mode, so nobody really serious about this problem.

Is there any official report of the reasons of this accident?

Sattelite AIS is not so easy task. I think they've just made agreement with any SatAIS provider (Orbcomm etc).

Everybody many thanks for feedback and links!

Hans, i always glad to share some data, exchange photos, links etc. I think i will contact with Alex with some suggestion of data or link exchange. He's done a giant job in his site. But i think you can use your photos in several resources, not only in one site, so i will be happy if you'll find time to upload it to lightphotos as well, if you want of course  ;)
The only thing i want to say regarding such sites as Alex has. I reviewed many lighthouse galleries i found that all of them are based on the home page of one person who fill it and update it regularly. And if this person busy/not interesting anymore - site start to degrade very soon. There are many sites with photos, which are simply abandoned and will never updated anymore. That's the thing i'm trying to avoid. As you may be see, last years internet significally changed. Before it was based on "individuals" who created and supported own sites. Now we're living in Web2.0 times - everything now based on the communities, social networking, so users doesn't like simply read or watch, but prefer to participate in site life. That's what i tried to make - you can upload photo, add comments, speak with another users, rate another photos etc. And this is best way to keep site up-to-date - even if i'll stop to upload anything - site will be filled by another amateurs and this is great. I don't want to say something bad about another collections they are great and interesting, but things are changing and concepts which were good 10 years ago, now looks not optimal.
Ups, my message turned out too loooong, sorry about this  :)

Hello friends!
I would like to introduce you my new internet site www.lightphotos.net. It's intended to make collection of photos of lighthouses around the world. Last years i've visited many of them due to my job, so i put it to the Internet. But looking in general i understood that many lighthouses became relict in epoch of electronic navigation. Many of them are currently being removed from operation and simply abandoned. So i think it's a good idea to take and store photos while they still exist.
The idea of the site is simular to our favorite shipspotting.com - everybody can register and upload photos free and unlimited.
So please if you are interesting in this project and want to participate in it - please have a look here. I will be appreciate for any feedback. If you don't want to participate, but have some photos of the lighthouses and can give me permission to upload it instead of you - simply send it to me via e-mail. Many thanks in advance.
PS I've got the permission to publish this topik (thanks, Derek) so please don't consider it as spam  :)
