Shipping News and information / Maxim Gorkiy - static hotel at Hamburg?
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:48:04 PM »
Rumour has it that 1969-built Maxim Gorkiy may have a future as a static hotel ship/tourist attraction at Hamburg, Germany, her old homeport. Very nice idea!

By the way, can anyone tell me the current whereabout of the vessel. Is she still in Venice, where her last voyage for Phoenix Seereisen ended on November, 30?

Greetings,
Jens

The future of 1969 built Maxim Gorkiy (ex-Hamburg, Hanseatic) seems to be uncertain again. She was to sail as Marco Polo II from April next year for Wane Heller's Orient Lines.
But due to the current economic climate the launch of Orient Line's cruises will be delayed, Heller announced today. However he did not say how long the delay will last. (Read here )

Maxim Gorkiy's charter with Phoenix Seereisen ends on November, 30, after (I think) more than 20 years. She was then scheduled to drydock in Greece for a refit to comply with SOLAS 2010. However Heller did not comment her future in the announcement.

Will he spend money on a 39-year-old cruise liner when he doesn't seem to know when (and if he ever will) need it?

Best regards,
Jens

Shipping News and information / Saga Rose to be retired
« on: November 05, 2008, 12:16:01 AM »
Saga Holidays, owner of the 1965-built Saga Rose (ex-Gripsholm, ex-Sagafjord) have announced to retire her at the end of 2009.
She's scheduled to arrive at Southampton for the last time on December, 6, 2009 after a 37 night cruise in the Mediterranean.

Looks like she's the next victim of SOLAS 2010. (Just guessing, though)

Best regards,
Jens

Shipping News and information / Maxim Gorkiy to become Marco Polo II
« on: August 23, 2008, 11:05:31 PM »
According to Maritime Matters (www.maritimematters.com/shipnews.html) 1969-built Maxim Gorkiy (ex-Hamburg, Hanseatic) will join newly reformed Orient Lines in 2009 as Marco Polo II.
After the end of her current charter to Phoenix Seereisen in November she will be refitted for about two months in Europe to meet 2010 SOLAS requirements.
In the spring of 2009 she will then begin sailing as Marco Polo II on European Cruises.
Now this is really good news! :-)

Greetings,
Jens
