Shipping News and information / Explosion and fire on ferry LISCO Gloria

Nearly 240 people were rescued from a ferry in the Baltic Sea in the early hours of Saturday after an explosion on the ship set it on fire. Around 20 people were injured, largely from smoke inhalation, three badly enough to be taken by helicopter to hospital, while rescuers said many were traumatised by the experience. Authorities in Cuxhaven said there was an explosion at around midnight on the upper deck of the Lithuanian ferry the Lisco Gloria.  Six ships went to the scene to help, including the ferry Deutschland, onto which the passengers were transferred and then taken to Kiel, arriving at around 6 am. The Lisco Gloria owner, DFDS Seaways, said it was very grateful for the swift assistance offered by the authorities.

Situation with Somali piracy in Indian ocean turned into real hot one, Indian ocean is under siege. In Tanzanian waters there were at least 5 attacks during 3-4 days, plus battle between pirates and Tanzanian Navy patrol boat. Pirates highjacked two vessels, Indian asphalt tanker Asphalt Venture and Iranian dhow, later freed by Italian ITS Libeccio:
On 29 September, the EU NAVFOR Italian ship ITS Libeccio freed an Iranian-flagged pirated dhow, which had been located off Tanzania yesterday by an EU NAVFOR French Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA). The French MPRA located the dhow towing a whaler and two skiffs, indicating that it had possibly been pirated. The MPRA maintained surveillance until ITS Libeccio arrived in the area and launched her helicopter to investigate.
In the north pirates highjacked Greece freighter Lugelo, but fleed vessel being unable capture crew, sheltered in engine room, and afraid navy would free vessel and capture them. In a second attack in the Gulf of Aden at 0540 UTC (08h40 local time) on 08. September 2010 Antigua&Barbuda-flagged, 735-teu boxship MV MAGELLAN STAR was targeted and boarded by pirates in position 13 23 N 049 58 E. The vessel had delivered goods to Indonesia and was on her return voyage.
The ships crew locked themselves in a safe room and requested for assistance. Apparently there is at present a stand-off between the pirates and navies, which could reach the scene. Further reports are awaited. As of July 19 crew 11: Bulgarian 1, Filipino 6, Polish 1, Russian 2, Ukranian 1 (ITF)
A third attack has been reported today involving Jamaica-flagged 28,200 dwt MV MILTIADES with 23 crew on her way from Suez to India with fertilizer. Reportedly five or six pirates were arrested in the unsuccessful attack and the vessel is said to sail free.

Early on the morning of 8 September, the Merchant Vessel (MV) OLIB G, flagged Malta, was pirated in the East part of the Gulf of Aden. After report from a merchant vessel that a skiff was approaching MV OLIB G, and after several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with the vessel, the USS PRINCETON warship of Task Force 151 launched its helicopter. The helicopter was able to identify two pirates on board MV OLIB G.
The MV OLIB G was sailing West in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor through the Gulf of Aden with a cargo of ballast. The MV OLIB G, deadweight 6,375 tons, has a crew of 18, among which are 15 Georgian and 3 Turkish. Olib G. IMO 8026608, dwt 6406, built 1988, flag Malta.

Canadian tanker Nanny ran aground in Simpson Strait, Nunavut, Arctic region, on September 1. Salvage under way, no spill reported. In Nunavut waters on August 8 ran aground tanker Mokami, refloated same day. Cruise ship Clipper Adventurer ran aground in Nunavut waters on August 27.

BEIJING, Aug 31 (Reuters) - An empty French oil tanker and a Chinese cargo vessel collided off the coast of China's eastern Zhejiang province on Tuesday, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Six people were missing after falling overboard from the Chinese vessel but no oil spill was reported because the tanker, the Flandre, was not carrying oil when the accident occurred at 11:10 a.m. (0310 GMT), Xinhua said, citing the Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration. The Flandre was sailing to the United Arab Emirates from Ningbo in China, it said.

AP: Clipper Adventurer exploring the Northwest Passage in the Arctic has run aground on a rock that wasn't on the map. Robert Bradbury of the Canadian Coast Guard said today they got the call about the stranded Clipper Adventurer late on Friday August 27 2010. Mr Bradbury said the icebreaker Amundsen had been dispatched to the area and was expected to start removing passengers within a couple of hours. He said there were 197 people on board and no one was reported injured. The passengers will be moved via the icebreaker to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, about 50 nautical miles away. The 90-metre cruise ship is operated by Ontario-based Adventure Canada. The company said efforts by the crew to dislodge the vessel were unsuccessful and now rests with a slight list.

Passengers rescued from ship stranded in Arctic
Coast Guard spokesperson Theresa Nichols said the operation to remove passengers from the grounded ship began at approximately 4 p.m. ET August 29. "They're ferrying them now to the Amundsen," Nichols told The Canadian Press in an interview from Winnipeg. "They think that whole process will be about four hours." The ship's 110 passengers and 69 crew members are all said to be fine.
