It looks like you will just have to use your imagination as to what these ships are transporting.  I am sure you will find this a much more enjoyable endeavour than were you to learn of the actual cargo - much like discovering the secret behind a magic trick!

I am also a keen fan of Ocean Liners and enjoy all of the suggestions in this thread. Also, I disagree with Pieter Inpyn that the heyday of models is at an end. I think there are still plenty of us enthusiasts left!
