I know what you mean Captain Ted!

The worst case I had was having to restow over 1000 containers in one port to destress the vessel after vast changes in container weights in plan between ports. Not helping was the fact there was a big discharge and no backload which I knew nothing about in advance, but one would think the planners would have had a better heads up! Needless to say I was very popular for that one but at least was supported by company in the end for my decision. It was a long 2 days constantly working and reworking plans and stability in consort with the planners until we got something that worked. I just wonder how many times that has happened on ships and the stability and stress alarms ignored.

This figure as good as any, its debatable whether carriers will fess up with true loss figures for a survey.

The loss of the MOL comfort served merely as a warning that with megasizing of containerships it is likely there will be more catastrophic failures. With such large numbers of containers on board and invariably a considerable number of inaccurately declared container weights coupled with extremely quick turnarounds hampering correct ballasting of a vessel to counteract stresses there is plenty of scope for disaster.
From experience, even if containers are declared correctly it doesn't always follow they will be stowed as per plan. From the ship side, it is not even remotely possible to verify what is going on weight wise, the shore planners plan has to be accepted. Even the correct number of containers on board at any given time is not guaranteed!

It's all about time pressure, who is going to take the time to ensure every one of the hundred million containers shipped every year is correctly weighed and stowed?

Taking containers to 9 high on deck is asking for trouble in any case, it is asking a lot of the lashing system. It would be nice of course if ships could sail in fair weather all year round!

This does seem to be a widespread problem, not only with the 2 sites featuring in the forum at the moment. I also have found my photos in other locations without the appropriate copyright or photo credit.

Maybe there is a way for Shipspotting to put an automatic watermark on photos with the up loaders name and copyright,,

Well built! However the Chinese manage to keep many vessels going for very long careers so there must be a good market for these vessel types. Pity the Silver Light wasn't so lucky.

Craig

Help and Advice / Silver Light - IMO 7001871
« on: September 25, 2013, 09:04:29 AM »
hello everybody,

Have been trying to locate a photo of the vessel Silver Light, built in 1969 as the Ganges Maru. Renamed Agelos Seraphim in 1974, Orion Star 1981, Med Mariner 1986, Zileena 1986, scrapped 1992.

Can anyone help?

Thanks and regards,

Craig

An observation while posting today:

After posting a couple of photos from the early 60s I notice the photo capture date doesn't show against the photo, even after entering it a second time. Later dated photos are no problem.
Perhaps the site software doesn't like earlier dates?

Agree, it is sad when a long standing member feels the need to delete and leave. I have been following the deletions forums with interest and after trying to find photos considered for deletion like others on here I discovered I also had a few deleted without my knowledge and they didn't seem that bad to me, just don't fit the policies of this site. This prompted a look back through some of my postings to see how they compare and I think there are a number there that are not the best and I was thinking to remove them.
Perhaps my comment re Port Pegasus could have been worded better; anyway I was just curious to see what makes a photo interesting or appealing and to do it with as short a comment as possible attached to the photo. As it was a low scorer compared to others, I thought a bit of feedback might be of help in deciding what to post in future, after all the site is about sharing and it is nice if you can share what others would like to see. I take photos from many angles but of course don't post them all.
As for my previous deletions comment being deleted, yes I eventually saw why one of my photos was deleted; I had accidentally uploaded 2 similar photos of the same ship.

Re Trans Future 5, Not sure what's going on but the Trans Future 6 spent a similar amount of time either in or anchored off Nelson over Christmas,, at the time was thinking maybe engineering issues but perhaps they are slowing down the schedule over the New Year?
The Trans Future 6 departed Nelson on 28th December at 10am and spent the rest of the day at anchor,,

Couldn't agree more Ted, one wonders just what it will take before somebody decides to sit back and say Hey, there is something wrong here! Money rules period, standards of training, the lot.
I have spoken with a superintendent or 2 who have freely admitted they can support a couple of reasonable accidents a year and continue to employ cheap poor quality labour to man the ships. As for hours of rest, they are a joke. I was on ships where it became necessary to work ridiculous hours and fight with captains to recognise them. Even PSC was satisfied with flimsy excuses from Captains regarding excessive hours and ignore them after initially picking up on them. Needless to say I no longer work for that particular company. I could go on!

Hi Tony,

unfortunately I won't be in Napier in the forseeable future but I would be keen to see photos, even if they are cropped and resized.
There are quite a few other photos I am looking for from the 80's as well, but I will see how I go with this query in the meantime.
I know the problem of having photos all over the place, I am still in process of a big sort out and reorganisation myself!

Regards,

Craig

Hi everybody,

Over the years I have kept records of shipping in Picton Harbour in New Zealand and photographed many of those ships, however my collection is somewhat incomplete as I have missed many ships due to work etc.
If anyone out there has photographs of the vessels listed that they wish to share that would be much appreciated. If the photos were actually taken in Picton, that would be even better!

From 1978 I am looking for the following:
Jade Bay, Pacific Ocean, Kinkasan Maru, Wakasugisan Maru, Wakanesan Maru, Dunedin, Shinsho, Meiho Maru

From 1977:
Hardwicke Grange, Ho Lung, Malaysia Permai, Tongariro, Regent Cosmos, Titoki, Rose Acacia, Fairsky, Wild Flamingo, Itoham Maru, Suzeric, La Plata Maru, Frubel Oceania, Laurentic, Seiten Maru, Homei Maru, President Magsaysay

From 1976:
Taupo, Port New Plymouth, Medic, Turakina, Straat Freetown, Sonoda Reefer, Wild Auk, Fairstar, Somerset, Kaethe Jebsen, Buenos Aires Maru, Shin Prima Maru, Nipponham Maru No1, Taga Maru, Narcissus, Kintai Maru, Leidenschaft

From 1975:
Straat Cumberland, Straat Chatham, Straat Clarence, Huntingdon, Manapouri, Wild Avocet, Ryutu Reefer, Sabrecore, Golar Ragni, Nippon Reefer, Auckland Star, Port Chalmers, NZ Waitangi, NZ Aorangi, Shohusan Maru, Alucom, Tasman Career, Manjusan Maru, Aegis Beauty, Royal Viking Star, Royal Viking Sky, Royal Viking Sea, Ligar Bay, John Wilson

Some of these vessels have been well represented in various websites including this one, but for those vessels I am hoping to locate pictures taken in Picton.

Thanks
