Hi John

Nice shots - I was reading a report that all of the vehicles have now been removed from the ship, evidently simply by cutting their retaining chains and letting them fall onto the beach! - Now that mus have been some sight  :-o

Have just come across this forum, so I thought I'd share my collection of 39 photos of the Riverdance, that were taken between the 1st and 10th February, including several taken from the low water mark (outside the exclusion zone) looking back towards the land.

http://trampics.fotopic.net/c1452168.html

Included in the set is one photo showing two shipwrecks, the three masted Norwegian Barque 'Abana', that was wrecked in December 1894 on its way from Liverpool to Florida, with the Riverdance only yards away in the background.

Hi Alan

Great collection of photographs with some fine detail of how the ship lies and also the state of the cargo. I suppose the Riverdance now rivals Blackpool Tower as the biggest tourist attraction  :-)

On the trampics-photo you can see the bones of another wreck in the foreground. Here`s the story:
In the very foreground you see the bones of the 3 masted barque "Abana" which grounded here in Dec 1894. The ship had set sail from Liverpool bound for Florida on Dec 21. Bad weather forced the ship to shelter off the Manx coast. This afternoon the lookout on the north pier sighted the ship, drifting in a north-westerly direction, with her sails torn to ribbons and was evidently unmanageable. She grounded close to the cliffs at Little Bispham shortly after 5 o

I've just uploaded eight more Riverdance photos (five taken this evening).

http://trampics.fotopic.net/c1452168_49.html

She's settled down a few more feet since the head-on shot that I took on 23rd Feb. I estimate that the superstructure's buried at least fifteen feet into the sand at the bow end now.

Hi Tim

Yes the video clip does demonstrate how 'quickly' she has gone over onto her side and beyond.

At least the salvors have a got a flat beach to work from when they start the job of demolition - tide will be a bit of a problem though!

I've been reading that the wreck is being badged as a 'must see attraction' for Easter  :-)

One enterprising local firm is reported in the Blackpool Gazette on line @ http://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/wyre-news/Riverdance-ferry-Easter-attraction.3891467.jp

"Printing company, D and R Designs, in Marton, are currently designing Riverdance memorabilia including T-shirts, key rings and mouse mats."

According to Blackpoolgazette.co.uk of Mar 21 the "Riverdance" was declared a total loss now. She is virtually flooded at high tide, and the only question is to get the ship off the beach in one piece or scrap it in situ.

Hi Tim

The article perhaps comes as no surprise!

"Tony Redding from owners Seatruck Ferries Ltd, said: "She is a constructive loss and will never return to service".

Interesting that the priority is still to get her off the beach as it will be far more expensive to demolish her there.

The article also makes the point that the vessel has sunken so far into the sand that at high tide she is close to be being completely covered by the sea.

Talking to the "locals" they are hoping to refloat her and tow her away for scrap rather than demolish her on the beach.

Hi Bob, thats going to be a task?
Getting her upright will be really hard, they will have to get rid of the 15ft or so of sand she has sunk into first?

Hi Bob

Really interesting photographs and they certainly show how much she has sunk into the sand. I wonder how they will get her off the beach - pulling her back to 0 degree's seems a very difficult task to achieve with her lying so far in the sand.

Cutting her up in situ will also be difficult what with the tides.

I see that the locals are now complaining about the increase in traffic caused by sightseers  :-o

Hi Alan

Some dramatic and graphical shots - really does demonstrate how much she has sunk int the sand. It looks to me that she is so stuck that no amount of power would pull her out so my money is on a cut up on te beach.

Isnt the bridge roof now seperated from the bridge?
Same as Steve, i bet they are going to scrap her on the beach. No crane could lift her upright on moist sand. Bringing a floating crane in seems impossible as well, it will have to be perfectly calm seas!
We will have to see what happens....

Hi All

I see that an announcement has been made that the stricken Riverdance will now be demolished on the beach - this piece from the BBC Web Site:

 Stricken ferry to be dismantled

A ferry stranded off the Blackpool coast is to be dismantled on the beach, officials have decided.

Riverdance ran aground off the Lancashire coast in January after being hit by a freak wave as it sailed from Northern Ireland to Heysham.

After several failed efforts to refloat the vessel by owners, Seatruck Ferries, the firm said it will never sail again.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has now said that the ferry will be dismantled and the parts recycled.

The process is expected to take between 12 and 14 weeks.

A total of 23 people were airlifted to safety - 19 crew and four passengers when the 6,000-ton vessel ran aground.

It has since become a popular tourist attraction as people from across the UK visit Blackpool to see the ferry, which is stuck fast on its side.

It is estimated that about 4m (4.4yards) of the ferry's wheelhouse is under the sand.

The vessel will now be stripped down internally until only the shell remains.

The hull will then be cut into manageable pieces and transported for recycling, the MCA said.

Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of State's Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP), said the operation would cause "minimum disruption" in the area.

The original plan to refloat the Riverdance was abandoned after it was battered by storms last month, causing it to list further and sink deeper into the sand.

Story from BBC NEWS:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/uk_news/england/lancashire/7340904.stm

The UK Maritime and Coatguard Agency (MCA) Press Release is:

Press Notice No: 096-08
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Posted 13:36 GMT

RO-RO RIVERDANCE TO BE DISMANTLED ON SITE

After a lengthy evaluation process, the owner of the Riverdance ferry, now lying on Blackpool beach, has produced plans to dismantle the ship in situ on the grounds that this represents the best option available in the interests of safety and protecting the environment.

Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of States Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP), has been involved throughout and has informed the owner that he has no objection to the plans.

Weather permitting, it is estimated that the project will take approximately 12-14 weeks.

Options examined ranged from righting the vessel (known as par-buckling), cutting up in situ or a combination of both. The preferred method will involve cargo, trailer and machinery removal, including any debris and any pollutants, whilst maintaining the integrity of the hull. The vessel will be stripped down internally until only the shell remains. The hull will then be cut into manageable pieces and transported for recycling.

The Environment Group have been advised as well as Defra, the Environment Agency, the Marine and Fisheries Agency and Natural England. All parties (including Defra, the Environment Agency, the Environment Group, the Marine and Fisheries Agency and Natural England) recognise that, due to the uncertainty and technical difficulties of righting the vessel, cutting up in situ is now the best option.

Until the new contract for demolition is awarded, SMIT Salvage remain on contract to carry out caretaking duties only.

Hugh Shaw said

I look forward to being able to brief officers and elected members of the local authorities to explain how and why the forthcoming works will be carried out. I also look forward to working closely with all interested organisations such as the police and local transport services to ensure that minimum disruption is caused to residents and local people.

The original plan to reduce the list using tidal and internal buoyancy was abandoned due to the additional structural damage sustained during storms on 12 March. The vessel remains lying on the beach with a list of 100 + degrees. In addition the vessel continues to sink deeper into the sand. It is estimated that at least 4 metres of the bridge / wheelhouse is now under the sand.

On Thursday 31 January 2008, the vessels crew, on passage from Warren Point to Heysham, reported that she had developed a 40 degree list and was drifting towards the Lancashire coast. The vessel subsequently grounded at Cleveleys Beach, North Shore, Blackpool.

Salvage job goes to local company.

Heysham based Hancock's Contractors will undertake the task of
dismantling the Riverdance.

Tony Redding, spokesman for Seatruck Ltd, said "There are 2,600 tonnes
of steel in the structure in total. The ship will be cut up using
powerful shearing machines and the small sections will be taken away to
a recycling plant in Liverpool.

Seriously though, it's not surprising they have had to resort to cutting her up in situ.

Hi All

I see from the BBC News Web Site that there has been a fire on the Riverdance - here is the story courtesy of http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/lancashire/7406105.stm

Fire breaks out on stricken ship

Demolition workers have been evacuated from a ferry grounded on a beach near Blackpool after fire broke out.

The blaze began at about 0420 BST in a tractor unit of a lorry in the hold of the Riverdance, which ran aground off the Lancashire coast in January.

More than 20 firefighters tackled the blaze on the ship off Cleveleys, but had to withdraw as the tide rose.

The ship, which is on its side and has sunk into the sand, is being taken apart. Up to 30 workers were evacuated.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "No persons are reported to be injured and all workmen on the vessel were evacuated.

"The tide is now rising and the firemen have withdrawn to the promenade."

Fire crews from Fleetwood, Bispham, Blackpool and St Annes are at the scene, where it is hoped the blaze will burn itself out.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

The Riverdance had been heading from Northern Ireland to Heysham, Lancashire, when it was hit by a freak wave on 31 January.

Twenty-three people, including four passengers, were rescued by the RAF from the stricken vessel.

Tourists flocked to the area for the sight of the sinking, tilted ship while the authorities tried to decide what to do with it.

Although it was initially hoped the ferry could be refloated, the decision was taken to break it up.

Salvagers started preparatory work to dismantle the ship, which was expected to take 12 to 14 weeks, on 2 May.

Up to 30 workers from Hancock's Contractors Ltd, based in Heysham, were on board when the fire broke out.
