Hi Brian

The Marine and Coastguard Agency site isn't up to date but according to http://www.parismou-training.org/showdetainedships.asp?doctype=58 she was detained in the UK on 7th January 2008.

Pirgos is showing up as having had her classification suspended as at 17th January 2008 - see Class Direct live @ http://www.cdlive.lr.org/vesselstatus.asp?LRNO=7924839

Hi Brian

Time will tell and when the likes of the MCA and Paris MOU sites are updated we will learn what the detainable deficiencies were.

From the Paris MOU, Pirgos was last detained in Canada during 2004 - see the outline for the reasons @ http://www.parismou.org/ParisMOU/Inspection+Database/Basic+Search/default.aspx

Hi Cawky

I see from the Port of Tyne Movements Schedules that Pirgos is on the list to be outbound to sea today - an estimated time still in place. http://www.portoftyneonline.co.uk/harbour/expected_shipping.asp

Hi Cawky

I see she sailed from the Tyne at 16.52 and is headed for Limassol (Cyprus) so her faults must have been corrected.

Hi Brian

I assume you mean will HMS Ark Royal show up on AIS  :-P

The answer to that is a no - an operational Warship wouldn't give its position away!

Weather looking good for her arrival - I haven't made my mind up yet as to where I will photograph her from. Quite fancy the North Pier.

Pirgos is not making very good speed!!

I like the view from littlehaven where the houses are on the south side you can get quite close up to ships there as it is the narrowest point on the river.

Steve do you play online on ship sim 08?

Its a laugh sometimes

Hi Brian

Yes I can mirror that from the North Shields Fishquay Market with the added bonus of having a further view to the West. Great place for getting a full bow on shot.

I've got SM 08 on my lap top but haven't used it for a while - not used it 'on line', didn't even realise you could do that?

Hi Steve,
Just been for a pint on the Law top , overlooking the Piers and i heard that there is a shipment due next friday of , listen to this ;-

60,000 tons of coal , i said "er it must be two ships due in onn the same day" but no it is not , it is going to the biggest load of coal to come into the Tyne in one go!!! 8-)  8-)

According   to the PTA movements the JIN HE is due in , and the agents are Dan Shipping , who are the agents for all coal imports.

Worth keeping an eye out for this one mate!!

Oh by the way this is my 100 th post , I am a very long way behind you thou Steve

Hi Brian

Well that's what happens when you discuss things in a pub  :pint:
The Jin He will certainly beat the previous 'heaviest Bulker' record for the Port of Tyne which was previously held by the Maddelena D'Amato (IMO 9225196) - see this photograph of her inaugural visit - http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=370893

Jin He is 77,250 DWT and the Maddelena D'Amato is 74,716.

Hi Bruce

Well I've yet to see a RN Warship sending out an AIS anywhere close to the Port of Tyne - I'll take a specific look this afternoon to see if we get a ping from HMS Ark Royal but my money would be on there being no signal.  :-)

Hi All

Just to add to this thread -  the UK Marine and Coastguard Agency reported today in a Press Release dealing with detentions of foreign merchant shipping during January 2008:

Date & Place of detention: 07/01/2008 - Newcastle
Vessel Name: PIRGOS (General Cargo)
GT: 10,230
IMO No: 7924839
Flag: St Vincent and Grenadines
Company: Ribex Maritime Ltd
Classification Society: Lloyds Register of Shipping (LR)
Recognised Organisation: Lloyds Register of Shipping (LR)
Summary: 32 deficiencies in total (6 detainable). Detained because there was no effective transmission on the MF radio installation and the RT/DSC antenna was defective on Stbd VHF. The starboard lifeboat took 1 hour to lower and the port lifeboat had still not been able to be lowered by the end of the inspection. In addition the accommodation bulkhead No2 deck was corroded through and repaired with tape and the galley ventilators on Nos 1 & 2 decks were also corroded as were the bulkheads in the provisions and bosuns stores. Other deficiencies included - the fire and abandon ship drill was not according to the Safety Management System (SMS), the galley and the provision store were not hygienic and there was no hot water in the galley. It was also noted that the Master and Chief Engineer did not have their hours of rest recorded. The vessel was still detained at 31/01/2008.

Hi Steve
Looking at the list if I had been a crew member I would have jumped overboard to be safe.
Might have been kinder to just scrap her!
