Post by: Jens Heri on April 21, 2007, 06:58:41 PM
At 4 o'clock (british time) this morning fire broke out on giant trawler HERCULES imo 8907060.

4 ships took part in the rescue of the crew.
The ship is somewhere in the Pacific, probaly near Chile.
Hercules is under Faroese flag. Two week ago they started fishing for horse macerel.

She was built in 1991 and measures 5000 DWT.

One hour ago the owners Thor Fisheries explained in a press release that 1 member of the crew is dead and 10 are missing.
The crew was 116 men of different nationality Norwegian, Asian, Faroese and other.
The fire has spreed and the owners are facing "a total loss"  of the ship.
The survivors are onboard sistership Poseidon.

You are right very bad.
We are facing a total loss are the owners word.
The incident took place in international water. A Chilenian plane was ower the ship (probably theire picture we see).

In a few hours a Chilenian Coast Guard vessel will arrive to take the survivers from Poseidon.

I don't know more about the incident. The Faroese media have not followed the story up, but only reported from two press releases from the owners.

I reckon so far from shore there is no one to tackle the blaze. It will keep burning.

Hercules is 1 of 15 so called Vigo class ships built in Vigo, Spain from 1991 til 1995.
Lenght: 105 meter, Breadth 20 meter.

Hercules was only taken over by Thor Fisheries in Februar and this was theire first fishing.

Just to give you the latest from the owners.

1 Chinese citizen is dead, 1 Russian and 9 Chinese are missing

They don't know the cause of the fire or where it started, but it may have started when packaging caucht fire in a stores.

Later today a Chilenian Coast Guard vessel will reach the scene. They will board Hercules if the fire is out by then.

According to the Chilean Navy website fire started on 20th April at 20:45 LT. First call was from POSEIDON at 01:16 LT on 21st April. The vessel position was 280 nm SW of Ancud.
A better picture can be found here (http://www.lun.com/modulos/catalogo/paginas/2007/04/22/LUCSTDI08LU2204.htm) it was taken from a P3 Orion plane
If I'm right this is the third vessel of this series -built at Vigo & Gijon- damaged by fire.

Also Sozidanie burned of the coast of Africa a couple 2 or 3 years ago so that would make it 4.
Nice boats though I worked on one summer of 96 while fishing Pollock and Herring in the Bering Sea And the Sea of Ohkost.

To add to your discussion about all these fires.

The owners of Hercules (Thor Fisheries) were asked by media, if there had been a previous fire on Hercules. The owner said no, but there had been a fire on Poseidon 2 or 3 years back.
Thor Fisheries is the owner of Poseidon.

An inquest will be held in Valparaiso, Chile today.
Tugs are standing by at Hercules. The fire is out.

The hull of Hercules will be checked for weaknes before they trye to tow it.

And thanks for posting the picture of the burned out sister ship.

A sister ship of this vessel, Athena, also owned by Thor Fisheries has caught fire on Wednseday while fishing off Chile. I think that the fire has been stopped, but does anyone have more information on this?

According to the Danish maritime weekly SOEFART, 29 June, 2007, the reason for the fire might have been found.
The Danish Maritime Authorities, assisted by the police and "fire technical expertise" have found defects in the fluorescent tubes on sister vessel POSEIDON. A few months ago both ships had new tubes installed of identical type as in the hold of HERCULES in which the fire (in cardboard packing) started. Tests have revealed that the tubes overheated due to "light arcs" in the sockets.
A warning has been issued regarding this type of tubes: "ADVANCE model Centium 1CN-2P32-SC, Instart - start Electronic Ballast".

Does anyone know anything more about the Athena?

Hi Spotti
The fire on Athena was preventet from spreading. Nobody was injured.

Just a few a the crew remain onboard. The rest of the crew went onboard another sister ship called Poseidon.

Athena headed for Chile by own power, but a Chilean tug was on the way.

Athena will arrive at Talcahuano, Chile. Allready in Talcahuano is the burned out sister ship Hercules.

Hercules will be repaired.

Link to Chilean navy site - sorry in Spanish.
You can search for the Athena incident on the site.
