Due to Cyclone Gabrielle, Port of Auckland will pause operations at 3pm today, 12 February. They hope to resume on Wednesday morning but this is weather dependent. There are at present 11 vessels at anchor in the shelter of the Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, with another 7 vessels due in the next two days. Several container vessels have come north from the Tauranga anchorage for shelter.

There are some changes at Swire Shipping.
Kota Bahagia IMO 9593672 is replacing Tasman Chief on the Trans Tasman schedule. ( She visited NZ in December 2020 for PIL when a fire broke out in number 2 hold when she was berthed at the Port of Napier.)
Swire are ending their East South East Asia service to NZ and replacing it with the Pacific Weekly Express service, which will link South East Asia with PNG and the Pacific Islands directly. NZ cargo to PNG will be loaded at Auckland by the WCNA container vessels, and tranship at Sydney to Swire vessels. Cargo from South East Asia will be shipped on PWX vessels to Noumea and then transhipped onto North Asia vessels to Auckland. The last vessel on the ESEA service will be Tonga Chief.
Samoa Chief will transfer from the ESEA schedule to the North Asia schedule, replacing Noumea Chief.

Lyttelton has capacity issues in its terminal, so Maersk have decided to use the retiring Maersk Nadi and Maersk Nansha to load containers for Asia at the end of their NZ service. They will load direct from Timaru and Nelson on their repositioning voyages,, reducing demand their usual tranship arranegment will incur, and also the Southern Star service (Rio's) will now have a fixed berth window at Lyttelton to improve Maersk's schedules.

Rangitata is now making 1 or 2 voyages per week between Napier and Gisborne for export containers. The Wairoa Road won't re-open for several months which is presumably the duration of the service. That said, the Napier/Taupo road was originally going to be closed for "months" but re-opened in 5 weeks, so possibly a similar result may change this fixture as well.

MSC have been confirmed as buyers and in the meantime, the next voyage of the Pohorje has been cancelled and the MSC schedule now shows MSC Durban IV in her place, so possibly this is her new name.

Two vessels absent from the Maersk "Southern Star" service are due to return imminently following drydockings, the SFL Maui and Rio de la Plata will replace the fill-in's SFL Hawaii and Monte Tamaro. Some speculation Maersk would take the opportunity to redecorate the Rio de la Plata into their colours and naming scheme as they did last year with other former Hamburg-Sud vessels. This possibility made more likely by a source
suggesting a Maersk Rio Delta will join the service at the same time other schedules nominate the Rio de la Plata.

Another newcomer to these parts also has a Maersk connection though that is from a past life, the 2005 built MSC Durham has been added to the Capricorn Asia service, previously sailed as Maersk Durham and more recently as CSL Santa Maria. At 4,838TEU one of the larger vessels MSC has brought down to New Zealand.

Ref. query from Peter Kerr - "I notice "DESTINE" is due to arrive in Wellington today. I'd only ever seen her as a bunkering tanker especially around Circular Quay, Sydney. Has she been sold? I haven't heard any news about that. She is staying in Wellington for 10 days - again interesting. Does anyone know what's up?"

I thought would move the matter to the regular New Zealand string:

In response, my sources advise - As noted the Destine previously operated in Sydney and noe following acquisition by Silver Fern Shipping, the bunker tanker will be permanently based in Wellington under the management of BP. She will operate from the Burnham Wharf in Evans Bay servicing the Interislander and Bluebridge fleets, and is intended to be renamed Kokako.

Nicolai Maersk is loading Melbourne 9/10 and is showing loading containers at Bundaberg 15/10 that have been railed there, don't know where from. Nicolai Maersk is doing a voyage that was originally AS Sabine , as she has only just arrived at Auckland .

Foul weather at Port Chalmers as well hampered the last voyage of Nicolai Maersk and lead to schedule adjustments though the notice made no mention of working any other ports. Maersk Wellington to make an ad hoc call to Timaru as part of this issue.

North Asia service vessels are back to running 7-10 days late so still issues with reliability though nowhere near as bad as the covid era. Tauranga not immune from weather issues either, and recently HKG closed down as a cyclone passed, though a boon for photographers with 90 vessel moves photoed over the next couple of days as operations tried to catch up.

Why the changes?
PFL is obviously for Pacific Forum Line. I don't know what they intend to do with NPDL Tahiti and NPDL California. California seems a funny name addition for a ship trading in the South Pacific.

Due to ongoing industrial action at the Sydney container terminals, Maersk have decided to drop the port from their OC1 ECNA/Latin America schedule. The vessels will instead call at Brisbane, as well as the Melbourne call. Containers for discharge and load in Sydney will be transhipped through Tauranga on the Polaris service. To accomodate the increased container volume they are adding a fourth vessel to the Polaris schedule and adding the call into Tauranga.

The new vessel will be Archer IMO 9338058, and she will slot in at the end of January.

Does anyone know what is happening with Majestic Princess? She sailed from Sydney to Auckland, and sheltered in the Bay of Islands anchorage due to yesterdays severe storm. She then proceeded on to Auckland and has been going around in circles. Port of Auckland has her anchoring from 13.33 today until 04.30 on March 22. Can't see that happening as she has passengers and crew on board. Weird....
They have now modified her anchor time to 01.30 6 March. She may be omitting her Auckland call and heading to Tauranga where she is due tomorrow.
Looks like she is heading straight for Tauranga.

Does anyone know what is happening with Coastal Bulk Shipping's Rangitata. She arrived in Auckland from Wellington on 18th November 2023 for annual survey. She had completed survey some time ago and been out to the Hauraki Gulf anchorages a couple of times for engine tests and compass adjustments etc. She has had several departure dates but these keep being put back. She was supposed to sail at midday today 2 April, but now it is "maybe" on the 15th April. I wouldn't have thought a small coastal shipping company could afford to have a vessel out of action fo so long.
