Title: mystery ships category
Post by: Stan Muller on March 06, 2012, 09:26:53 PM
Almost 400 photos in mystery ships category; when identified, why not transferred to proper category?

HI Ken,

It is not meant as critism to the admin. It is a question for the members who post mystery ships. Why not replace them to the proper category after identification? That's where this category is for I think.

Hi Stan
There are 387 photos at Mystery ships main category
continue a slowly circulation
New photos are continue to come and some of them solve
Generally identified ship's photos updating by members without messages send by me
sometimes i am sending messages about some identified vessels for update
but i cant get reply from some authors.
Especially from non-continuous members
But if you check comments under photos
you will see only a few vessels exactly indetified and wait for update..Maybe 3-5 vessels, not more than 10
Other some of ships are waiting for correction..I have inconclusive comments too
There are not any result on hundreds comments under photos
Maybe % 95
3-5-10 ship's photos should not be problem
i think members must check their mystery photos continuously
best regards
ilhan

Hi Ilhan,

great job you are doing. my point exactly : "i think members must check their mystery photos continuously". I like to add; "and post them immediately in the proper category after identification".
I saw that 14 photos found another destination over night. Less photos in this category makes it simpler to browse and increases the change to solve the remaining mystery ships.

Thanks for the the answers

Just a couple of observations:

The "distant" photo that doesn't meet site criteria for an individual category ought to be OK for a while, provided reasonable location/date info is given.  They can quite often be identified using AIS data once the company and/or class is established - but not all members can access practical search tools for this.

Good quality mystery ships could stay longer than a year - new members are joining all the time, with different knowledge, and different resources which can solve old chestnuts.  In many cases they cannot be moved to another category due to uncertainties over categorisation (eg age, tonnage, function etc).  The Poirots amongst the members love to look again at "cold cases".
