Arnold Maersk lost about 20 containers and 50 more were damaged because of a storm. The ship is docked in port of Seattle.
Is it usual cargo ships to damage containers?

There are all sorts of guesses, running up to thousands a year, but the World Shipping Council reckons the number is no more than 350 on an average year - still a lot if you happen to run into one in a small craft, but not many compared to the number carried . . . Drewry Shipping Consultants, who track container inventories at a microscopic level of detail, say 183 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) are moved globally by sea every year and at any one time, approximately 6.7 million containers are in transit!

Since the time where being quick in ports with discharging/loading and safety of cargo at sea is cheaper or more important then vice versa containers getting lost. Not that before that container were not lost but due to being quick in port is more important because of cost, lashing systems were changed and/or reduced at the account of safety for the cargo
