Title: RCI's next geration cruiser: order at aker finnyards

Here's some interesting news: RCI hast signed an ultra-large GT 220.000 cruise vessel at aker finnyards for delivery in 2009. Here's a link to aker's press statement. There's also a scale drawing of the new giant on the aker website.

A very impressive ship:

have a look on the dimensions
360 m x 47 m x 65 m high above waterline

passager: 5400 according www.akeryards.com

just a little msitake Milind, the gross tonnage is 220 000
160 000 is the gross tonnage of the Freedom of the seas(exactly 158 000)

I was just in Miami, saw one of RCI's 138000 GT ships.  Huge compared to the Panamax ships nearby.  Freedom of the Seas even bigger...hard to imagine the massive size of a 220000 GT passenger vessel.  I wonder about the quality of the port experiences...5400 passengers disembarking at once in a Caribbean port?  With perhaps 2 other mega cruise ships in port?  10000-12000 tourists emerging into a small island city in one morning seems certain to overwhelm the island.  We seem to have come full circle to the days of the liners, with the voyage itself being the better part of the experience.

Personally, I prefer smaller ships and less frequented ports.

Regarding large amounts of passengers embarking/disembarking the first time my family and I embarked on the QM2 in New York, was chaotic at the best. 6 months later,on our next trip, it was much better. (Another Carnival ship was in port as well). Heaven knows what it would be like inthe Caribbean.  Like Charmctug I prefer cruising in smaller ships, with less ports.
