If (... if! ...)the information and AIS plot on the following web page is correct, the whole bridge crew is going to have a LOT of questions to answer.
If (if!) the plot is correct, the vessel has passed through a narrow sound between a small rock and the island og Giglio. According to my Google Earth measuring tool, the sound is merely 80 meters wide! From the translation from Turkish, it would seem there is no shallow water between Civitaveccia and the narrow sound, and as we all see from the damage to the hull, the vessel must have been in really shallow waters, with the damage stretching almost to the waterline and the big rock wedged in the hull.
See the purported AIS plot here (Google Translate from Turkish):

See also the following video, which I believe shows the Costa Concordia doing a close "sail-by" (as in "fly-by") on Giglio Island in august 2011. Obviously, she is showing off and seems to be passing dangerously close to the island:
http://video.corriere.it/nave-concordia-al-giglio-/9dfa5ea6-3e9b-11e1-8b52-5f77182bc574

The story also seems to be supported by the following Italian web page (via Google Translate):
http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=it&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=no&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.savonanews.it%2F2012%2F01%2F14%2Fleggi-notizia%2Fargomenti%2Fcronaca-2%2Farticolo%2Fcosta-concordia-si-incaglia-allisola-del-giglio-3-morti-e-14-feriti.html

Here's a picture of the island, with the rock and the narrow sound in the background (via hotlink):

A huge gash is visible on the hull:

Lots of interesting pictures of "Vale Beijing" here, including the temporary conveyor belt on deck and the transhipment of bunkers to "Sea Emperor":

This sure is an interesting story, both the sie and number of the Valemaxes, the apparent political and economical tug-of-war between Brail and China over control over the trade routes, and the problems with "Vale Beijing".

While many newsstories have cast doubt over the decision by Vale to order all these ships, and at quite high prices, the broader picture seems to be less appreciated. Tradewinds brought an interesting angle yesterday, citing a shipbroker at ICAP Shipping who said that any loss from selling the ships at a discount would be

I agree. Based on history, there is no reason to say a 400,000 dwt vessel is more dangerous than a 300,000 dwt vessel, and there are many of the latter sailing the seas. There were no major structural failings or incidents with the 400,000 - 565,000 dwt ULCCs built in the 1970s, to my knowledge.

I saw the Chinese Shipowners' Association has sent out a press release this week, saying the Valemaxes were allegedly unsafe and posed "catastrophic" pollution risks.
Rhetorical questions:
- Are they referring to the ones built by their compatriots, or the Korean-built ones?
- Also, how can the risk of pollution from bunkers(!) from a 400,000 dwt dry cargo ship (Valemax) be anywhere near as "catastrophic" as a spill from one of the elderly VLCCs that trade to China carrying full cargoes of crude oil? Perhaps they should focus on the latter in stead...
- And finally, what is more risky - a brand-new 400,000 dwt Valemax or one of the old single-hull 250,000 - 300,000 dwt VLCCs that the Chinese have converted into VLOCs?

Don't believe the hype.

I guess she's waiting for orders. If she has no cargo to load, then better to wait at sea to avoid port fees etc.

Seems she left Spain in late November after unloading Brazilian iron ore: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1445887

There are too many large tankers these days - not too few. Some say the overcapacity exceeds 15 percent. This means rates are very low and owners have begun putting some VLCCs in layup.

There are some interesting videos on Youtube, including this one:

Now, that's bad weather!

(...)

oh, btw: there is no such thing as hurricanes on the North Sea, you can have hurricane-force winds though but actual hurricanes (cyclones or typhoons) are not possbile on these high lattitudes.

It's not in the North Sea but in the Norwegian Sea, off Kristiansund. You may be right there are no hurricanes though, but after 12 months at sea in that area I can confirm we have hurricane force winds up there.

Here's another video of the same wave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOYF4W6yRKg&feature=related

"West Navigator" meeting wave measured at 30 meters during hurricane "Berit" off Norway 25 November 2011.

The big wave hits just after 3:20 in the video:

The video was shot from the fully enclosed bridgewing, port side. The woman at the end says "Wow, that gave me the chills".
