According to an announcement from one of the partners involved in the NZX Service, the OOCL New Zealand will only be a temporary replacement.

At 4578 TEU she would be the second largest container ship to visit New Zealand, and her capacity far exceeds other vessels on that service, so maybe she is catering for seasonal demands.

Post by: Robbie on April 17, 2010, 10:41:05 AM
I think you may be right, I was reading somewhere that the trade was not economical anymore but the Monte Stello would offer a Nelson-Wellington trade once a week to compensate.

The Ken was sold to the US based Exim company but is off to the Indian coast for beaking. As this ferry has been sailing the NZ coast for the last 9 years she is not ISPS compliant so the new owners are working on her while in port to get her up to a satafactory standard. Interestingly the Indian crew flown over to take the ship could not provide the appropriate documentaion for the internatinal voyage so Martime NZ has halted the inspection. Once she leaves Welington she will make a brief stop over in Western Australia for bunkers then continue to her final resting ground.

Hi Stevie

Maersk have advised that Maersk Duncan will load under this name on her first NZ voyage. A lot of concern amongst exporters that while replacement vessels have same total capacity as the outgoing fleet, they can only carry 500 TEU reefers compared to 1,300 on the 4100's they replace.

Also master of JPO Leo believes now remaining on current Australian trade so possibly some other change to take place in this case.

Cheers

Brent

I was surprise to see on Kiwi Car Carriers site the Saracen Star IMO 8217556 was due in Auckland on 3 September. According to Ship-Breaking.com publication #20 page 35 she was broken up in India in May 2010 getting a price of 405$ US per ton. Did the sale not go through and she was put back in service?
