Title: Marine Traffic revamp
Post by: Richard Paton on November 01, 2023, 05:50:37 PM
Does anybody else think the New Marine traffic look is a step backwards? I think personally i preferred the older look with the sea light blue and the icons as they were....

Well, their latest redesign will make my autistic desire to become their top photo uploader a tiny little bit more complicated... :)

Anyway, it's always weird to see something changed after you've been familiar with it for 13+ years.

Ridiculous!! I just looked at it...Somebody had to justify his/her existence. The ship symbols are so small and faint it is hard to see. Why @#$% with something that looked well?

The consensus of comments here isn't in favour.

I got this response from them:

" Neiriz (MarineTraffic Support)

Hello,

Thank you for contacting MarineTraffic Support and for providing your feedback regarding our websites new interface.

It has been carefully designed to reflect most of our users feedback over the years, however we understand that for some users, the previous interface was easier.

I have already forwarded your comments to our product team for consideration, rest assured that they will be considered.

Thank you for your honest opinion on how to make our website better.

Your thoughts truly matter to us.

Kind regards,

Nei"

I wander who the hack gave them feedback that led them to create crap like this.

Their reply to me included this:
While the new map layout was a business decision, it is crucial for us to be aware of what dedicated users such as yourself are thinking about this change.
That makes it sound like cost-cutting was the reason to change the maps.

I switched to veselfinder. Much better.

This would be an excellent opportunity to switch to ShipXplorer, which will have be the best quality pictures, i.e. the ones shown on www.Shipspotting.com...

Does the ShipXplorer site work well? I tried to register but never received a confirmation e-mail ( I checked my spam folder too). Also, when I enter a ship's name or IMO the answer is always that they can't find such ship/IMO.

I can't say it works well as it does not display all vessels in range like the other traffic sites :(

Does anyone think MT will pay any attention to the less than enthusiastic comments regarding they're update?

I don't think so, they were not so long taken over by a company (Kpler) that has a much wider scope, an they want to put their stamp on this change. In their announcement they are stating that with the take over of Marine Traffic, they might be able to achieve what we always called the holy grail of maritime economics, i.c. directly linking ship movements to cargo movements.

I bet they will make it a fully subscription service only soon.

MarineTraffic app pretty much a "business" app. More on Kpler recent acquisition below link...

Who is this KPLER firm? Never heard of them before. The Fleetmon-website has been sold to them as well, their logo is now: Fleetmon from KPLER. I received an e-mail a few months ago about a merger of Fleetmon and MarineTraffic and Fleetmon will no longer exist after december 2023. Also I received as member of Fleetmon a new fresh MarineTraffic account. And today in Fleetmon this message: Due to our merger with MarineTraffic, we are preparing to migrate all your marvelous photos from the FleetMon website into the MarineTraffic platform. To avoid losing your precious work, we have to suspend the upload functionality here. So the end is close for Fleetmon.

Hello, all of you.
Just started to read your posts and ask myself why you think the new design is a step back.
- Search bar is now placed at the top and in the center, making it easier to search for ships, ports, and other assets.
- The menu bar has been moved to the left side of the screen, making it more logical.
- The color palette has changed from a bright blue to a more subdued grey.
Looking for your comments.

Are you an employee of Marine Traffic? Joined yesterday and first post is in support of some changes which many, myself included, do not find as friendly as the previous version. Of course you are entitled to your view but maybe you should identify your association with our interest in international ship spotting so we can all understand your point of view.

The new layout doesn't bother me - like all change you get used to it.
My only complaint is that I am only getting a 3/4 page view . They want money before I can have 'full page' back. Bad luck them.

I made a complaint that the white sea does not show the finger piers any (as used in the Europoort). You cannot see whether a ship is moored east or west of a jetty, which is important for the time you want to take a shot of her.
I got a polite message back that my complaint had been addressed and that the problem was solved.
Next thing I did was checking, no difference...no solution
About three to fours our later I received one one those message that ask you what your thoughts are about the follow given by MT.
I replied that I was 100% dissatisfied as the problem was not solved.

Since then I heard nothing and nothing has changed.

Developments of a disquieting nature.*

They've changed the photo uploading page. Even as they still only allow photo uploading one by one, there is no more possibility to keep the data by clicking "Back" and keep uploading other photos. The worst thing is that the map to mark the position of the photo resets to zero after every upload, and the map itself has lost the satellite view option, as if they don't care about the exact spot of the photo.

There's also no more option to write an description/comment to the photo, again, as if they don't care about this information.

and what did not change, but was already a pain in the A.. is that the title of the photo does not necessarily represent the name of the ship in the picture, but it seems to given as the name that the ship had at the day of posting. So if you post a photo taken a year ago and the the ship has been renamed during that year, the new name will be allocated....

It is not possible anymore to upload photos for ships without MMSI, even if they have IMO. So, forget old ships or scrapped recently.
Also, if active vessels have sometimes hidden or unclear MMSI signal -the same not, just forget. And they are not going to improve it somehow as reported currently by their IT team.  Hmm.... :-\

By this "progress" they one time to be faced to keep active vessels only. It is not good or bad for them since they operate an AIS system not a historic one, but users and photographers have to keep it in mind.

They also recently changed the ship detail layout, and for instance year of build or names history have disappeared behind the payment wall.

..... and a name search seems now to only give the first six vessels of their choice.
And the +/- zoom now disappears when showing a vessel track.

Hi David,

I have  attached a photo where you can see how to see and search for more results, Its not easy to see the scrollbar as it disappears when the mouse cursor is not right over it.

Brgds,
Geir

Thanks Geir.  OK, can see it now
Very fiddly way to get to "see more results", which was always visible before at the bottom of the dropdown.

Furthermore at my profile where I have only 50 photos uploaded, I cannot see the  expected arrivals... i think it is only available at the 60 something  euro per month.  Correct me if i am wrong, but I don't where also I can find all the expected arrivals as per AIS vsl signa (i.e. Piraeus for example). I can find let's say 20-30 at myshiptracking also.

Sadly the new owners of MT have totally wrecked what was a perfectly good website to go down the road of trying to extract cash out of everyone whilst offering a inferior product than before. They don't seem to want to listen to any feedback we have im sure sent them in emails and messages on social media - in fact they said in a reply to me that we "the users" had requested all these changes! Well they won't be getting a black penny out of me that's for sure.

Yup, they ruined it and I got the same lie that we the users asked for it. Total BS!! I switched to vesselfinder and it works just fine
