I noticed that too Tomas. It seemed to be working on Saturday and possibly Sunday but yesterday it had disappeared. It's very unfortunate as I rely heavily on this site for information like that. While the builder details were there this was sort of a "one stop shop" for data but I now have to search another (possible two other) sites to get what I need. Can anyone tell us what has happened?

Help and Advice / Movement Related Websites
« on: January 22, 2015, 03:49:52 PM »
Good afternoon, Gentlemen.

Not entirely sure if I'm on the right part of the forum but I will start here anyway - if the mods want to move my post to another section or delete it altogether that's just fine.

My question is this. Both the Gibraltar Port Authority and the Port Authority of Algeciras used to run excellent web pages giving movement information - the usual data: arrivals, departures, ships at berth, etc etc etc.

In the past I have made extensive use of both these sites to obtain movement data, particularly on return from my various Med cruises. I was down in Gib the weekend before last and fell into the fatal trap of not logging any movement data because I could "always rely on getting it from the web pages". Sadly however, neither page now appears to be working (although both are still there). Another useful site ("Port Arrivals") also appears to have gone down the tubes.

Does anyone know of any particular reason for this - maritime security perhaps? Or am I just being paranoid, or hitting a particularly unlucky cyber patch?

In truth, I very much doubt that she ever will be built. But if she is, at 56,000gt and with 2,600 passengers her space:passenger ratio is going to be one of the worst around. For comparison sake, QM2 at c150,000gt carries roughly the same number of passengers.

"The new ship, which its developers claim will match the original Titanic for luxury... "

Well, all I can say is that a cabin the size of a broom cupboard with bunk beds, a folding washbasin and no en-suite facilities is most assuredly not my idea of luxury. And I don't believe it will appeal to the vast majority of present day cruise passengers.

For what it's worth, my personal view is that the thing would look reasonably good as a piece of urban architecture in some modernist vision of a city centre. As a "yacht" it just looks bizarre.

Help and Advice / Re: Using Google Chrome
« on: January 18, 2014, 12:26:07 PM »
Hi,

When using Google Chrome for the last couple of days I find that the scroll bar does not work on any website but everything works OK when using other browsers. Anyone else experiencing this problem or any idea how to cure it.

Regards

Bob

Robert,

this probably won't help you much but the problem seems to be known to Google and pretty widespread. This article gives some info:

According to AIS, one of the ships involved seems to be RICKMERS DUBAI.
Yvon

Thanks Yvon,

I got there just before I read your post  :)

Still don't know what the tug was though.

Just saw this on the news

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25696127

Does anyone else get as irritated as I do at the fact that our esteemed news media seem to be utterly incapable of reporting ship names? I sometimes feel that they aren't even aware that they actually have names.

Anybody know which vessels are involved?

The Aida ships are a total disgrace , they maybe eyecatching but the company have gone away over-the-top with their extreme livery...tone them down a bit please!!

I totally agree - the juxtaposition of the big red lips on the bow and the demented sperm cell on the sides is particularly unfortunate IMHO.

...Of course one does not know what was going on on the bridge, if the thruster went down a kind of confusion (I don,t want to call it panic) could have set in, like someone tries to check fuses / calling engine etc. and possible the people on the bridge did not pay attention for a while to the surroundings (Situation awareness)...

Yes, I was thinking along those lines myself. There have been a few serious accidents in the aviation business where the flight deck crew became so obsessed with a relatively minor problem, like a defective warning light, that to all intents and purposes they forgot to fly the aircraft and crashed.

Makes me think

My first thought was also,,why the heck is the tug line to the ship slack and she is not  going full astern,

2nd thought however, from her angle she might be not in the beginning aware whats going on (only in the last sequence where you see the tug you can see the line tight) If the pilot, and I assume there was one aboard, did not give the tug instruction to pull back,,she does not do it.
What wondered me much more is that the vessel goes ahead a long time but not full ahead and still keeps going backwards and then the full ahead comes a whole while later. Somehow it looks to me that in the beginning nobody was really aware how serious it is and nobody saw that it goes wrong. Somehow it looks to me that neither the capt nor the pilot were right away aware that something is wrong. Seems the ahead in the beginning could be part of the normal maneuvre which went wrong and when they realize it goes wrong they give full ahead, as we can see too late.

Capt Ted - that's very interesting indeed and it's good to have the views of a professional on this. I would also be interested to hear what you think about the stated cause of the incident which, as I understand it, it was that the bow thruster had failed. It's a little hard to see what contribution the bow thruster could have made to this whether it had failed or not.

QM2 has those too!

QM2 is powered by a CODAG system. The twin "funnels" near the stern are the exhausts for the two 25,060kW General Electric gas turbines that are used to augment the the ship's diesels in situations where extra power is required. Because they are derived from aircraft engines, the turbines are relative light and compact and can be mounted high on the superstructure thereby reducing the amount of space required for their intake and exhaust ducting.

Nope - she's on a 5-nighter:  Soton > Hamburg > Zeebrugge > Soton.

After that, on 10 Jan, she starts her World Cruise 2013 returning to Soton on 26 Apr.
