I think ID-ing old photos that don't meet the site standard and reporting them should be OK.

32
Still very slow here. About 30 sec to open a photo or to load the site.

I spoke too soon. It is still painfully slow. I think I'll give a break to uploading until the slowness is resolved.

Seems to be working fine today. Thanks IT  :)

If I can add my 2 cents...
I don't open every photo I like, these days due to very slow opening, but if I like the photo I do give it a 'like" click, whether I open it or not. So, clicks+likes=some kind of total  :).

As for improvements, the only thing I would like to see is the return of the pages rather then automatic fill in as one scrolls down. This gives a much better sense of how far back you are viewing.

Site related news, functions and modules / Photos very slow to show
« on: September 03, 2023, 04:26:05 AM »
When I click on somebody's thumbnail photo it takes a long time for it to appear in a bigger version. This is on my home computer using Mozilla, at work it is faster but not as fast as it, I think, should be.
Anybody else?

I noticed it too that opening photos is somewhat slow. When clicking on photo to enlarge it there are wide black bars on both sides and the photo does not actually appears bigger.

Thanks Denis, I found it.

I tried to save 3 photos of SEA CLOUD but only one appeared in the "Favourite" photos. If I delete this one I can save another one of the same ship but not two or more photos of a ship with the same name.
Am I doing something wrong or is it a glitch in the system?

Same here

There is a comment about a recent lighthouse https://www.shipspotting.com/photos/3604378 saying that 'we would like to have the lighthouse in close up, rather than to show how its fits in the environment.'
I would disagree - a close up is a very clinical thing- a shot showing the surroundings is far nicer.

F'rinstance I think my two shots  -  of Faro Fairway and Faro Delgada - are far better than my shot of Faro Niebla. The latter would have been vastly improved with a bit of the fort somewhere in the frame.

Hi Csaba, yes I made that comment, and as I said the emphasis is on "house", what ever that may be. In the case of the photo to which I made a comment all of the tower and the surrounding building could have been in the shot, but too much of the sea or the countryside will go at the expense of the clarity of the subject itself.
Your remark about the Faro Niebla which clearly is part of a larger building is useful, because that shows a way to define the limits of what we want to see. Personally I would say that the fort could be in the shot, perhaps not in its entirety but still parts of it could be useful.

(PS: Have your issues been addressed that you posted earlier about portrait shots?)

Yes, it has been taken care of. Thank you kindly :-)

I think a similar issue have been discussed earlier regarding too much environment/surrounding and too little ship.  Comments were along the line that "ship only, edge to edge of a photo and nothing else" is just a mugshot of a ship, not showing it in its natural environment. There were also some stunning photos, but, truth to be told, the ship was too small for a website that is about ships after all.
My thoughts are somewhere in the middle of it. Show the environment, as long as the lighthouse/ship is clearly the main object and is not lost in the background, however beautiful it may be.
Let the discussion continue...  :)

I like when the lighthouse is in a portrait format. However, the bottom 1/4 or so of the photo is covered by an advertisement which makes it unpleasant to look at, one has to scroll up and down to see the whole photo. Any chance to remove the add or just put the photos in a landscape format when the add obscures it much less?

This is a great addition. Lighthouses can be beautiful photos.
