Hello everyone,

it is a while, since I was contributing to this site. I was doing so, for some years and with a great pleasure. The even bigger pleasure was the community here, I met some fellow members and it was generally a very good atmosphere on this site.

It was also worth to look up ships data and keep track of ships ports as well.

There were shipspotters who just did it for the sake of fun, often a few from the same port. Of course it happened then, that 5 people posted same photos of the same day, the same port. But nobody did really miind, as everyone has a unique way to take photos. The community feeling was the most important thing.

Then, the ships data disappeared, I therefore did not step by here so often anymore.

Then, there was always an arguement about "why so many photos of the same ship" and "post quality not quantity".

I really got tired of that, because shipspotting is actually just going to your port, and take photos of ships, even with fellow shipspotters and share them there. Of course not the ship that comes here day by day, but after all, the landscape lets say along river Elbe is not so exciting and not always so special ships coming. But, still nice to post them and share them.

Also, take in count, some people travel a far way to see ships (like me in the past).

I do not like this discussion, I would like to see the whole attitude here going back to where we started - an easy going bunch of people, enjoying their photos, and enjoying other shipsspotters community and make contact in real life even.

Then, I noticed that some culprits are linking their photos externe somewhere, so just to gain hits and hits to get to the top three. And, we do not talk about special ships here, not the newbuilds or the scrapped ships from Denmark! We talk about rather bad quality photos of not any special good situation. Just link them for the sake of linking, not because they are special.

Whoever these people are, it would be good if they get a warning by the webmasters, to behave in a social way and stop such doing. After all, we are not community and not "like that".

I noticed as well, that the owners of the site do not give a sh... about above mentioned stuff, and the webmasters seemed also not to be listened to. I do not like that!!!!

Instead, there are stupid adverts, which have neither to do with shipping nor with travelling and worst of all:

During post few days I get some very iffy pop-ups in Russian language and some real trash pages open! I do not want that!

I will attach a picture of that trash, and I do not want to be bombarded with that. To be honest, such things are for me a real reason to stop uploading photos here and rather share my photos on facebook with people who are really interested in that.

I really hope, there will be a change, as I would like to return here, after a clean-up.

Of course it could be I am totally wrong ... :p :p :p After all, I have been away for a while. But I would like to hear your thoughts about this topic. For the meanwhile and under current situation I will not upload any more photos to my collection here.

with regards,

Cornelia

Help and Advice / Re: Not in focus

Very interesting how about changing that phrase to "Photo not sharp". It is understood by everyone :) Sometimes complicated wording makes also a matter a bit "unsharp" ;)

Consultations and review of site standards / Re: Topic 2: Focus and exposure
« on: September 06, 2015, 03:29:15 PM »
The way it is now, it is o.k.

Sharp means, if I can read ships name and see ships window and it is just as sharp as it is in real, too. Especially on letters you can see this very good.

Keeping site standards like they are now, is o.k.

5
The side limits are o.k., although it would be nice, if images would be resized automatically like it is on for example vesseltracker.com.

6
The current standard is o.k.

I think, if a photo is enhanced in such way, that it makes the ship look natural and does not make the colors etc. look in a way, like it never looks in reality, it is o.k.

It is in my opinion ok, to remove seagulls, some things are in the way, as long it is not possible to see this in a photo.

HDR images, I am against them, because they make the photo look un-natural, the sky and ship look like a drawing and not like they do look in reality. It is good, that these photos are not allowed because this is a page for photos and not for "piece of art". and "playground for photo-editing program".

Framing should also not be, just for the ake of making all photos here look the same.

Help and Advice / Re: Help, to identify this RUSSIAN ship and type
« on: September 03, 2015, 08:25:26 AM »
Thank you all for the help, once in a while it happens, that you really come across rare and interesting ships and whereas I was very happy to see what I thought was an "old coaster of the 50ies" I found to have seen an military auxiliary ship, which was found proof on many russian websites which deal with all kinds of Navy and ex Navy ships.

This here is also needed to be seen by the admin, who has mistakenly put this ship into the category for pipelayers. Sometimes, it is a  hell of a search to find something out, but it is worth it.

More info under the photo now, thanks to very nice international cooperation and this is, what makes shipspotting.com unique and also in such special cases.

Greetings,

Cornelia

Help and Advice / Help, to identify this RUSSIAN ship and type

Hello folks, anyone can help me to identify this ship, type of ship - it is hard to find any information in non-kyrillic and also the one I find, it is not possible what kind and type of ship it is. I have provided a link:

I think, the problem here is an attitude, that everyone has different attitude here, and everyone who says here "I do like this" actually says "I do like this and I expect others to do likewise". It does not work like this, of course.

Also, I disagree that a ship that is seen often becomes uninteresting. It is very interesting to follow the life of a regular trader throughout the years. Many of the regular ships to Hamburg, now are gone South or elsewhere.

I think, the way it is here now with the regulation 4 photos per ship per day is a good solution and it does not do anyone a harm, either.

Of course, then we have the "common sense" topic again: Although I do prefer to upload photos of a ship I have seen before, some ships I have seen so often, that I do not upload photo everytime I have seen it, but only if it is in a certain different situation/weather etc.

It is impossible to find a solution also for areas like Hamburg, when one ship does attract around 20 shipspotters and all take photos :) I think, we have to be tolerant and just take it as it is, for the quality, we have guarantee because of site rules.

I have been reading this thread, and I am a bit surprised about the discussion.

I know this site was originally meant for shipspotting. Shipspotting in my understanding means, to go on the shore and "spot the ship" - and document it by taking a photo. Just the way, some are doing it with trains. This is my understanding for shipspotting and it has always been like this.

Shipspotting has nothing to do with creating an album of the most beautiful photos you ever have taken. Shipspotting is making a documentary of a ships life, same ship, different day, different weather, same location (ok mostly same location as not possible to travel around so much). That meansm, you can take photos of the same Hamburg S

Shipping News and information / Re: How did you find Shipspotting.com?

It is so long ago, that I almost forgot :D :D

But if I remember right, a shipspotter I know mentioned, that he is uploading photos on shipspotting.com and then I thought, it is a good idea, and started too. Before and still, the other site where I am uploading photos is www.vesseltracker.com

On ebay you can also report "forbidden" goods for sale and items under copyright fall under this category too.

I think ventuary made a very good point here and I agree with him, although his wording is strange and very unlucky. I think, this site is for people who take and have taken photos of ships as a hobby. Not for press photographs and not for any kind of photos from archves. My opinion, just what I see. I quickly scroll over these black white photos only if its an old German coaster I look closer. Place here for all type of ships, that for sure.

I believe, the ferry that had the most modern interior of its time has always been and will always be the famous gas-turbine ferry GTS Finnjet, which was not only one of the most innovative ferries in 1977 but as well hold the title for the biggest and fastest one known for a very long time.

I know some ferries from 70ies, this one had many amenities I did not find on other ones of that time, for example air condition for cabins below cardeck, sauna, variety of restaurants and very colorful and stylish interior. More info can be found here: http://www.finnjetweb.de/en/

Btw.. travelling "only" to Europe, I do not understand, what is the problem. Europe.. NOT EU, that covers many countries from North of Sweden and Finland, to the UK, Poland, down to Greece and all these countries have damn many interesting ferries and alot of them have a good history. It does not matter, how many countries you travel, it does depend what you do, when you travel. Some people travel many countries but they do it in a superficial way, some travel not so much, but do it in a deeper way, in staying long time and make friends with local people and actually try to experience and not just at a glance.. of course, some ferries have always to be included :) :) :)

I am also not sure about modern interior on the TOR-Line sisters which ran for DFDS. I know the ships as Prince and Princess of Scandinavia, nice ones but after known the Finnjet, not too innovative I think!?

If you do mean ships like "Finnpartner" and "Finnstar" (Hansa/Star-Class)I can tell you, that these ships have same interior like full passenger ships like DFDS, the cabins are similar at least on Star-Class Finnlines ships. There is ONE bar, ONE restaurant and ONE cafe - not more. But, it is very spacious and also not crowded. Ships have sauna, too.

What about older "Hansa-Class" - these ships have cabins, that are bigger than average ferry cabins. We went on a trip to St. Petersburg and cabin was 19 m
