Shipping News and information / Tianjin smog
« on: January 06, 2017, 07:05:00 PM »
The article in Latest News about smog delaying a cruiseship berthing Tianjin on New Years eve is let down surprisingly by the accompanying pic. The keypoints of the article are smog, Tianjin and cruiseship, so it seems quite amateurish that a reasonably well informed business as Maritime Connector would fall so badly short in using a cargo vessel photoed on a clear, blue sunny day. Wouldn't happen in Ships Monthly!

Shipping News and information / Hamburg-Sud Red
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:43:40 PM »
Morning

I notice the hull colours in todays posting by Tino of Cap San Augustin can be described in the most kindest way as weather beaten.

Hamburg-Sud ships call regularly at Napier and we noticed the same paint distortion on quite a few of their fleet, including the modern "Cap Palmerston" class, while the "Cap Beatrice" class colours also seem to struggle to maintain the vibrant red hull theme the company is well known for. I guess the company like many others is sailing through troubled financial waters but the poor colouring must be disappointing to the company and certainly frustrating for us photographers as does not create the perfect "album" shot.

Seeing the photo today makes me think the problem is quite wide-spread so was wondering if may be the result of some major shift to an inferior paint, or maybe not applying as many coats and as regulalrly in the past. I wonder if others have noticed this development on the Hamburg-Sud ships sailing past their lenses.

Cheers

Shipping News and information / Pub Sails from New Zealand to London
« on: July 26, 2007, 08:23:39 AM »
As if there aren't enough pubs in the U.K., one more of a very unique nature has just set sail from Dunedin, New Zealand bound for London. For a number of months the Speights brewery has been running a promotion in New Zealand revolving around how one mate was trying to help out another mate living in London and who was missing his favourite Speight's brew. So the company decided to ship a whole pub over to him, sailing yesterday on the small Dutch cargo ship Lida (IMO 7392907). Four kiwi's are accompanying the pub, chosen from several hundred who competed for the right to make the long sea voyage to the northern hemisphere. There is also a separate competition for others to fly to London to meet the pub when it arrives. It will be travelling via Samoa, Panama, the Bahamas and New York, and is due to arrive in the Thames on the 3rd of October where hopefully Ken and co. will be able to update us on her grand finale, and maybe others such as Tom in New York may snap her along the way.

For further info on the venture see the attached link to an official company video clip of the vessel sailing.

Surely one of the more adventurous promotions you will see.

Shipping News and information / Bank Line to Rename Fleet
« on: February 05, 2006, 08:32:32 AM »
Bank Line

Bank Line began 2006 by sending their round-the-world fleet to Singapore for extensive refits and drydockings, during which time the fleet was also given new names. Ships were breaking their global roamings after arriving in the east from South Pacific ports, beginning with the Foylebank completing at Port Kelang 10 December 2005 then proceeding to Singapore for her refit. When she returned to service on 21 January 2006, it was under the name Gazellbank loading in Port Kelang and Singapore for the usual European ports. A summary of the four vessels undergoing the changes as follows:

Vessel   :   Foylebank       Speybank
Port Kelang   10.12.05         8.1.06
Singapore
Port Kelang    21.1.06           18.2.06
New name   Gazellbank      Mahinabank

               Arunbank         Teignbank
Port Kelang   5.2.06           27.2.06
Singapore
Port Kelang   17.3.06            8.4.06
New name      Tikeibank           Boularibank

To cover for the gap the dockings will create in the schedule, Bank Line have chartered a sister to the former Russian vessels on the service to make a round-the-world voyage. Built in 1986, the Vasiliy Burkhanov is one of 18 sisters in the class and is currently owned by FESCO and flies the Russian flag.

Cheers
