Today 18-01-2007, the Grimaldi Line RoRo vessel Grande Argentina suffered from rudder trouble on her way from Antwerp.
In the storm (windforce 10) she almost grounded.
Several tugs are keeping her away from the Terneuzen shore, awaiting for better conditions. Up till now the storm is still a threat to her and the danger isn't over yet. The weather will calm down after 21.00h local time according to the weather forecast. When the storm is over she will be towed to Flushing.
Grande Argentina 13.00h local time (http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=341225&cid=39), tugs keep her away from the shore. reinforcements are on the way from Antwerp and Flushing.

Not a good time for ships is it? Not surprising, I suppose, in view of the appalling weather we're experiencing. Thanks for the info Stan - and by the way your English is fine and way better than my almost non-existent Dutch! :-D

you were the man on the ground and thanks for bringing us pictures of this breaking news. I hope the vessel (which is familiar in U.K. waters) and all onboard her come through O.K. It must be a terrible day for ships... we couldn't even run railway trains properly over here today due to the weather!!

The ship and crew are all fine, no rudder problems and the reason she took 4 tugs was to safely take her in the lock due to the adverse weather conditions.

Okay, thanks for sharing. The local news agencies had another story at the time. But why should she go in the locks of Terneuzen? she came from Antwerp.

Hi,
The "Grande Argentina" (IMO 9198135) ran aground again. Again on the Westerschelde near Terneuzen. She was on her way from Antwerp to Dakar. The vessel was able to get loose by herself. She is now in Flushing for inspection.

Sorry, she was afloat again by assistance of EIGHT tugs; this vessel type is known for very bad steering habbits since they came into service; groundings collisions a.s.o.

That is true, steering habbits of this type(same w/Grande Europa-type) are quite unique, to be honest- unpleasant.
Due to huge massive quarter ramp, very thin/sharp shovel-shape corner construction under it - it all in combination gives at certain immersion of the ship this poor steering ability( swings enourmously fast to port!) Man has to be aware of that.

This new incident was not reported by Frederik and Gerda (Freger65) but by Frederik, also known as Fred Flintstone on the Ship-Hunters site (Site Admin on SH).

Grande Argentina grounded slightly with the bow after the M/E suddenly stopped.
The diver survey carried out in Flushing found no damage on the hull.
Thanks to the sand bottom.
