Just looked at a map to find where Guernsey was ... I didn't realize that the island was closer to France than England.

Does anybody know if taking pictures of the event is even a possibility?

Thanks,
Steve

Going by your news snippets on this site, Steve (in the absence of many others), it would seem that Canadian ships break down an awful lot! (LOL)

Hi Steve,
The 'Federal Miramichi' is at the moment 12.8 miles NW of Guernsey with the Tug 'HELLAS'imo7419690 in attendance (she left her Salvage Station position here in Torbay UK,my home, yesterday afternoon after receiving the call) you may remember the Hellas in your part of the world as she had a Canadian Federal Court Order taken out against her owners (Gigilinis Shipping Group Greece) for a grounding after a failed towing of a bulk carrier from Canada to Turkey in the Autumn of last year.
Also in attendance at the moment is the French ETV 'ABEILLE LIBERTE imo 9308699, owned by Les Abeilles International, a unit of Group Boubon.on long term charter to the French Navy and normally on Standby Station in Cherbourg .

probably at the moment with the poor weather conditions too far for photographs.

            Cheers
            Brimar

Steve,

Did you persuade the BBC to use your photo instead of the one they were showing previously :-)

Hi Phil,

No. When I woke up this morning their was an email that had just arrived from the journalist from the BBC asking if they could use my pictures. I accepted and sent them the pictures by email.

That's what happened. That how I found out what happened to the FEDERAL MIRAMICHI.

Are authorities insane ?...

There is "force majeure" or "act of God" if you prefer...  possibly an engine breakdown or harsh weather conditions and the authorities send legal warning "to the ship" that it should be running again...  if the technical problem is serious and - I believe - the crew is doing their best to remove the problem (eg. repair the engine), then authorities should probably send this legal warning to the God ?...

It seems it is the same attitue as in the cases of Erika and Prestige... the authorities refuse / deny the right for the port of refugee (that most probably would enable to avoid the disaster at all and prevent oil from spilling onto their beaches) and later, after the worst happened, they prosecuted the captains and shipping companies...

Thanks for background information for this story.

I do remember the 'HELLAS'. It was the one that was towing the CANADIAN MINER but hit ground near Cape-Breton Island.

Here is the article that talks about the detention of the tug:

Thanks for the story of the 'Hellus Detention'
looks like The Federal Miramichi is making good way again now but not sure if she is being towed by the Abeille Liberte which is still in close attendance. Hellas has now departed the scene and now heading west.

                              Cheers

To Mr Bob Scott:
There was a time when most vessels built in Canada,or imported in Canada from the UK, had equipments and machinery manufactured in UK. Perhaps it is still the same! Then you will understand why some of these ships break down.
Sans rancune.
