Title: Using Marine Traffic website

Hi Ship spotters.  Anyone have advice on using Marine Traffic website?/http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/?  I have noticed on many occasions that ships will be actually moored to local piers; but, the ships DO NOT show up on the Marine Traffic site as being in this area much less moored to a pier. Anyone have this same problem with using Marine Traffic site?

Hi Oldkayaker (great name, never give it up while you can still swim)

I have presumed that this occurred because the AIS transmitter had been turned off.

What you say makes sense; but, I have a query awaiting reply from Marine Traffic just to see what they say.

same problem here in NY. I think the guys who operates the AIS transmission take weekends off :-(  I also noticed  significantly delay 20-30 minutes or ship become phantom ships. They dissapear and reappear. But not complaining this site has saved me countless hours from strolling the waterfront hoping to catch something of interest. Joe B,

Hey Joe B,

I also use digital-seas.com for their AIS. They have not the same coverage as MT, but they are still growing. They also have a great iphone application that I use when I'm out without computer.
