So many posts of these millionairs playthings ,just me but cannot summon up any interest in these at all.
To me real interest is in commercial ships, including commercial boats and craft.
Appreciate of interest to many, just my gripe !!

Shipping News and information / Company songs sung by their crews
« on: December 10, 2018, 08:00:50 PM »
Prompted by Malim Sahib's comment on "Chakrata".
Remember the following sung by "Hungry Hogarths",Baron Line crews.
Don't think they can come better than this.

As I was wandering round the docks
A looking at the ships
I saw the Baron Cawdor
Underneath the tips
I asked the skipper for a job
He said "you'll do me fine"
Theres plenty jobs for bums & stiffs in the good old Baron Line.

The mate was from Iona
The skipper from Dundee
The bosun & the chippie from across the Irish Sea
The sailors from the Mersey
The firemen from the Tyne
You've never seen such a xxxxx crew till you've sailed with the Baron Line.

The cook he was from Senegal
The steward from Tyree
We had mutton for our dinner
And curry for our tea
The mates they got the bacon
The crew we got the rind
You've never seen starvation lads
Till you've sailed with the Baron Line.

Ye may have sailed in sailing ships,ye may have sailed in tramps
Ye may have been in whalers, off the Grand Newfoundland Banks
Ye may have been in tankers, and had a rough old time
But ye've never been through mill till ye've sailed with the Baron Line.

Does anyone remember others, don't suppose they are sung any more?

On You Tube "the best is yet to come".
Shows a quay side scene, people strolling around all over the place, but also a four crane bulker with the name "HANDYMAX".I cannot find any info on this vessel.
Any info on this, or the port where filmed?

Shipping News and information / Coaster "RAIDER" around 200 tons.
« on: August 14, 2015, 07:55:11 PM »
Well remember this small coaster, used to load grain in Dover, probably 1980's or earlier, also seen in the Thames.
Would appreciate history or seeing any photos of this vessel.

How about more of these (not containers-enough of these already).
This is what ships (most ships) are all about !
Especially would like to see those before containerisation.
Pleased that video finding is hopefully being made a lot easier (can't seem to find again the grain transfer between two Banglar ships).
Remember in the 1950's loading a full cargo of just about everything in the West India Docks squeezed between hatch beams and just about able to get the hatch boards on before sailing to the Persian Gulf.
As so often, regrets not taking photos.

Looking at various websites gross registered tonnage measurement applied to ships built before 1982,such ships for commercial reasons retained this measurement until 1994 when new measurement rules of gross tonnage would apply.
I think I am right in that after 1994, gt for these ships built before 1982,as shown on Shipspotting,in indexes & journals etc always related to their original grt whe built?
The changes in measurement it seems had a big effect on certain vessels - car carriers,ro-ros & ships with open shelterdecks, greatly increasing their gt.
I believe a lot of the older freighters with tonnage hatches, depending on their voyage & cargoes could then operate as open shelterdeckers with a significant reduction in their grt resulting in lower fees & charges.I assume  gt now shown would always be for the ship operating as a closed shelterdeck vessel with its original grt given.
Sorry if this is a bit rambling, but what I would like to know is,that for the vast majority of ships built before 1982,their gt as shown on Shipspotting etc would be very similar to gt as measured under the new rules (very little difference).
Would the gt of the largest container ships around now be similar if measured under the old grt measurement?
Would the gt of a liberty ship measured under the new rules be much different?

Shipping News and information / Rules of the Road !!
« on: May 08, 2015, 07:45:55 PM »
Now and again smaller vessels (around 2000 tons) anchor in the English Channel in Hythe Bay,either sheltering or awaiting orders.
What surprises me is that many do not display the ball or anchor light ,one even at anchor for 3 days with all navigation lights on permanently as though under way.
Don't they get reported by Coastguard or others.
Surely a serious offence,or maybe not any more!
Wondering just how commonplace this is?
