Title: LNG vessel to be laid up in Norway as spot market turns ugly
Post by: Mats on September 26, 2005, 06:56:54 PM
Suez Energy International has decided to put the 87,000-cbm LNG carrier "Hoegh Galleon" (built 1974) into lay up.

The company has the ship on charter from Leif Hoegh & Co of Norway until 2018. The vessel will be laid up in Holmestrand, some 60 kilometers south of Oslo, where it will arrive in the middle of October. Holmestrand was used for the lay up of large oil tankers in the 1970s and 1980s.

By way of background, a number of large LNG projects are being developed. There is a great need for new vessels tailormade for the relevant projects and owners like Bergesen, Teekay and H

interesting story, her sister(correct me if im wrong) the Norman Lady has been and will be in lay up in Gibraltar aswell, i dont know if its due to a surplus of ships or if it is because they have a much lower capacity compared to the newer builds.

My own backyard is once again going to host laid up ships, Mats ofcourse I will be taking photos, give me a call when youre heading down here.

The word in todays paper is that the ship is still under contract and will be taking on a new contract at the Norwegian Snow White field up in the north of norway (New gas field).

The paper also tells that more ships are on the way to Holmestrand, I will try to find some old images from the eighties when we had a full house of supertankers for years down here.

Here are a few pictures of VLCCs laid up in Norway in the early 1980s:

These are from Holmestrand:

The Galleon is, as you said, still under contract with Suez (former Tractabel). The lay up will probably not be for more than 6-12 months. After that, more terminals will be finished and she will hopefully be back in business. When she is going to Holmestrand, the crew will disembark and only one chief engineer and one captein/chief officer will be onboard for "maintenance" purposes. The reason for choosing Holmestrand as place for the lay up is because it is the cheapest place! It is cheaper to sail her from Trinidad (where she is right now) and to Norway, than to keep her down there, or Bahamas which was another option.
As Kruscher mentioned, her sister Norman Lady is idle at Gibraltar. But I dont think she will be laid up like the Galleon. She had one small cargo just a couple of months ago. Lets hope they both will be back in business in late 2006 and 2007. As for the Snow White field, I doubt the Galleon will be put into that trade. H

Please post more pictures of LNG vessels here!  Mats, if you can get the picture of Hoegh Galleon in Holmestrand when she gets there in mid October, kindly post it up! I personally believe that the LNG market is still alive and kicking!

Re ships for Snohvit - Arctic Princess has been subchartered by Statoil, the Charterer, to BG Group as the LNG plant is being delayed until 2007 or even 2008. Would be interesting to see what happens to the Lady after her delivery

Christian,

Thanks for sharing a lot of useful info about the 2 Hoegh vessels. From your pictures and posts you have given us a nice insight into these popular vessels and I was wondering if you are presently sailing on either the Galleon or the great ' lady'. If not what are your future plans regarding hoegh? Will you be assigned to any of their PCC's or just their tankers?

Thanks!

Milind

I have not been on Galleon, and I doubt that I will get there in the near future... I have been two contracts on Norman Lady and two contracts on Matthew.  On monday I leave for South-Corea to join H

Hi Christian,

Thanks for the reply. Looks like Gandria is going to be your home for a while :)
What is Gandria's run like? South Korea to Caribbean?
Your picture on the Bridge of Norman lady was fantastic and we are looking forward to some more LNG vessel pictures from you, especially since it is quite rare to have one of our community on an LNG vessel! Also, it would be great if you could take some pictures of the accomodation/ engine room etc after your voyage. If you are ever in the USA do not hesitate to contact me.
Take care and safe voyage!

best,
Milind

Hello again Milind!

I have a lot of pictures from inside superstructures and engine rooms of both Norman Lady and Matthew, but not posted them yet. I will do something about that when I come back from this trip.
Gandria runs between Pyeong Taek in South Korea and Indonesia. Will try to take a lot of pictues!
If I ever come to the States I will certaintly make contact! But I dont know when, unfortunately...!  :-)

Mats,

Thanks for sharing this. Is it really correct what the article said that as many as 70-80 tankers were laid up in Holmestrand in the 1970s and 1980s?

Jo,

No, there were never 70 or 80 vessels laid up there. A number of VLCCs spent up to 10 years in Holmestrand from the mid 70s until the mid 80s, but at most there were 6 or 7 vessels there at any one time. However, other vessels were laid up at Moss and other places in the Oslofjord, in addition to numerous vessels being laid up in Stavanger, Bergen, Aalesund and in sheltered fjords along the Norwegian west coast.

You can find a few pictures of these laid up supertankers here:

http://supertankers.topcities.com/id41.htm
http://supertankers.topcities.com/id130.htm
http://supertankers.topcities.com/id99.htm

These two vessel are actually pictured lying where "Hoegh Galleon" is lying today:

Christian and other interested parties.I was interested in finding your forum yesterday as I had spent the last few months searching the web for photographs of the ships I had sailed on in my younger days. It took me some time to find pictures of what in my day was LNG Challenger as the ship had gone through a few name changes.
I was one of two junior engineers who stood by the vessel's building in Moss Rosenburg's Stavanger yard and sailed with her from Savanger on 21/10/1974 when we proceeded to Canvey island to load some LNG for cargo trials after which we sailed to Bahrain arriving on 22/12/1974. I left the LNG Challenger supposedly to join another new build LNG carrier being built in France, but between me leaving Bahrain and arriving home the french ship deal fell through.
I had a realy enjoyable time both in Stavanger and on the LNG Challenger, which I thought was a very well built ship. This seems to be borne out by the Singapore refit of what would have then been a 26 year old ship to enable her to take on a charter for the next 18 - 20 years.
I have a couple of photographs of LNG Challenger in my day which I can post if there is interest, but be warned they are old and amateur and were intended for my memories.

Seems like the deal to get Galleon back in trade failed.
But it seems like Suez is eager to get her back in trade, rather than buying her out of the charter.

Christian,

Greetings! Since you are in the best position to answer this, what is the structural condition of galleon particularly her tanks? Did you guys have any issues on board that needed attention which were not normal?
I seem to recall a few years ago Norman Lady had some cracks in her tanks and had to undergo some repairs to get her back to a sound operation condition. I know this gave Norman Lady an extension on her lifespan but these Hoegh vessels must be coming close to the end of their lifespans.
Also, great pictures from your last voyage!

Best Reagards,

Milind

As far as I know, Galleon is in a pretty good condition.
Some years ago there was a fire inside void-space during repairs in drydock on Galleon or Norman Lady. I don

They could always send it out to OZ to carry LPG for the Australian Domestic Market like Bergenssens did with the Havfru for a few years.

That would be a nice site at 87,0000t Gas tanker coming to Hobart instead for these pissy little 4,000t things!!

Hi Christian,
We must have been two ships that pass in the night at some point, as I did a trip on the LNG/C British Trader back in 2003, running from Point Fortin - Lake Charles/Savannah/Puerto Rico/Cove Point.
This was when they only had the one jetty in Trinidad and prior to Train 4 being commissioned.
I've noticed that on a lot of LNG carriers lately that the large letters 'LNG' on the ship sides have been painted out, do you know why?
It makes the ships look better, but I cant see that being the reason, is it security perhaps?
I haven't been on LNG since 2003, been stuck on oil ships ever since!

Jim Christie
