Hello Fred, The real answer to your question is not very close. I am not into photography and use my lap-top with AIS live and a very good pair of binoculars (18x50). When the weather is very good I can see everything that is coming up the North East Lane which is probably some 25 miles off. If the weather is not good you can see absolutely nothing. I am into just ship-spotting, going back to my childhood when it was steam train spotting. From where I sit it is probably 300 to 400 feet above sea level, that's a rough guess. Unfortunately it would be no good for your type of spotting. Rgds jw..
