Shipping News and information / Chemical tanker detained
« on: February 24, 2018, 07:41:00 AM »
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has detained a chemical tanker off the Queensland coast due to alleged labour breaches.

AMSA officials are investigating claims of several serious breaches of the international maritime labour convention made by the crew of the Tintomara - which is flying the Liberian flag - and checking on the welfare of seafarers.

The 182 metre-long tanker has been anchored off the northern tip of South Trees Island, near Gladstone, for the past number of days.

An AMSA spokesperson confirmed they had detained the vessel for inspection and investigations.

"There's a number of allegations which we are looking at," the spokesperson told AAP.

The Gladstone Observer has reported members of the 26-person crew had complained of a bullying culture, non-payment of overtime, long
working hours and crew members losing weight due to the lack of food.

The Observer said the crew was made up of sailors from the Philippines, India and Bangladesh.

Tugboat crash behind fatal Queensland capsize[/b

A fishing boat that capsized off the north Queensland coast, killing its skipper, overturned in a collision with a tugboat, police believe.

Two crew, including one trapped in the upturned hull of the 17-metre vessel, were rescued off the coast of Bowen on Wednesday but the ship's skipper couldn't be revived.

Inspector Steve O'Connell believes they collided around 1.5 kilometres offshore near the Bowen Harbour.

"The investigation will focus on what caused these two vessels to collide under seemingly good conditions," he said.

Police reiterated praise for a quick-thinking diver who fed an underwater oxygen line to one of the men trapped in the upturned hull of the boat.

Inspector Steve O'Connell said two commercial divers jumped in the water, with one getting an oxygen line to the fisherman who was in an air pocket.
"Without them I think we might have had a different outcome for that man," he said.

"That diver was able to get an airline through with oxygen that we had on board from ambulance officers."

The trapped fisherman was able to make tapping noises on the underside of the hull which alerted divers to where he was.

He was eventually freed and taken to hospital conscious but groggy.

Maritime Safety Queensland will attempt to determine the circumstances of the capsize, while police divers have recovered boat fragments from the sea floor.

Tug operator Svitzer said the company was fully cooperating with authorities.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the deceased," a spokesman said.

"We are offering counselling and support to our employees, the family of the deceased as well as those injured on the fishing boat."

The two rescued men, believed to be in their 20s, were released from hospital on Wednesday night.

"He feels unsafe": Crew refuse to leave Glastone Harbour
A STALEMATE between a captain and his crew over safety on board the cape vessel Kanaris has grounded the ship in Gladstone Harbour for now.

International Transport Workers' Federation national coordinator Dean Summers said talks were underway to settle down the Filipino crew, but they didn't want to sail because they believe the captain is unsafe.

But the captain too is reportedly refusing to sail unless he gets private security.

"He feels unsafe," Mr Summers added.

One of the Filipino crew members died when the vessel was about 260 miles off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

It is believed the crew member was hit by a pulley in the head and died a short while after being hit.

His body was removed from the ship in Papua New Guinea and the Kanaris continued on to Gladstone.

Mr Summers said the crew were left traumatised.

"It was a grisly industrial accident, " he said.

MARITIME historian Ken Goodman is looking for information on the steamboat SS Louisa.

The 87-foot steamship was built in 1872 by Brisbane firm R. R. Smellie & Co and was one of the first iron ships built in Australia.

"Built for a bloke called Mellor, before the railway was built, she worked the Bremer River to Ipswich - including a sinking on the Bremer in 1872," Mr Goodman said.

"Luckily there was bugger-all damage to the cargo of beer and wine, nor to the steamer."
The Louisa was then purchased in 1884 by Orr and Honeyman and started trading on the Albert and Logan rivers.

"She used to drop into Jacksons Wharf on Russell Island in her travels to Logan Rivers," Mr Goodman said.

"Luckily, in memory of the old steamer, I did manage to tie up my little Louisa, my 24-foot long steamboat I named after the original, to Jacksons Wharf not long before the jetty collapsed into the water in the 1980s."

Louisa was sold to captain John Burke in 1884 and was used her to carry timber, maize, settlers' supplies, cotton and sugar along the Brisbane, Albert and Logan rivers.

John Burke established a company which traded up and down the Queensland coast for more than a hundred years.

The steamboat played an important part of the Queensland shipping scene.

John Burke sold her to three men in 1926, who started trading her again on the Logan River but they on-sold her in 1927 to Peters Slip at Kangaroo Point.

"She was used until 1937 as a dumb barge - meaning she had no engine," Mr Goodman said.

"After that she moved to the Mary River where she was used as a lighter.

"I made enquiries with the local historical society but couldn't find the date or location of her demise."

Anyone with information on the SS Louisa can phone Ken Goodman on 0423 216 909 or email [email protected].

Shipping News and information / PB harbour towage sold
« on: December 12, 2014, 06:58:20 AM »
Hong Kong-listed Pacific Basin Shipping will sell its entire stake in its harbour towage business in Australia for AUD74.0M ($61.3M) in a move to focus on its dry bulk business.

The sale of PB Towage (Australia) Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, will include 17 harbour tugs and a barge, a stock filing of Pacific Basin said today.

The deal involves all of Pacific Basin's harbour towage business.

The buyer will be Smit Lamnalco (Australia), a subsidiary of Smit Lamnalco Group, which is an international provider of towage and associated marine services to the oil and gas industry.

Completion of the deal is expected in January 2015. The company plans to use the net sale proceeds of $60.0M to raise working capital, including contracted capital expenditure.

In 2013, PB Towage (Australia) slipped to losses of AUD2.3M, down from profits of AUD7.0M in 2012.

After the completion of the transactions, the net assets of the company's towage segment will reduce to approximately $48.5M, representing 13 tugs and 6 barges for vessel towage business in the Middle East area, Australia and New Zealand.
