Upcoming vessel calls are listed on the Maersk Line website.

Another problem is vessel length. How do you get two ships of this size alongside at Northfleet Hope simultaneously?

The advertised quay length of the riverside berths is 600m. The "Cap San" class are 333m long, quite apart from vessel spacing clearances.

Could you (for example) berth a Cap San vessel and one of the Maersk ships used on the East Coast South America trade (length 300m) at the same time?

Shipping News and information / Borchard Lines
« on: February 05, 2014, 01:32:30 AM »
I noticed the sudden disappearance of Borchard Lines vessels from the London Container Terminal list of ships expected.

On consulting the Borchard Lines website, I came across an announcement on the news page to the effect that Borchard Lines is axing its Tilbury calls and will henceforth be slot-chartering from Hamburg Sud and Maersk's Mediterranean services at Felixstowe: http://www.borlines.com/news.html

A pity -- I remember Borchard Lines using the India & Millwall Docks in the 1970s where they pioneered the Combi concept, before going fully containerised and moving to Tilbury. Another small UK shipping line being slowly crushed by the competition.

With 20-20 hindsight, the decision by Forth Ports to acquire 100% control of Tilbury Container Services and buy out DP World

I wonder why Hutchison Ports -- owners of Felixstowe -- don't offer up their virtually unused terminal at Thamesport to the Felixstowe-bound vessels being held up at the Sunk because of weather-related issues.

I don't think that MSC Rita is too big for Thamesport to handle. Thamesport could certainly do with the business these days!

There is also a big capital expenditure programme underway at Tilbury which isn't attracting much media attention but involves a significant beefing-up of the port's facilities.

Here is an article on a crane delivered last month, supposedly the biggest harbour mobile in the UK: http://www.vertikal.net/en/news/story/18483/

The new crane with its huge yellow jib now features frequently on photos taken of ships in Gravesend Reach that are posted on this site.

This news should cheer up our valiant band of contributors who regularly post photos of Tilbury-bound vessels and have been depressed by recent service transfers to London Gateway and Thamesport: http://www.worldcargonews.com/htm/w20131121.072661.htm

The TCS vessel schedule posted on its website (www.tcsonline.co.uk) is showing a mystery vessel "QC3" due on November 16th, but not discharging or loading containers.

Is this vessel bringing one or both of the super post panamax container cranes that TCS ordered from Liebherr a while ago? I think the plan is to relocate the two smallest cranes on the riverside round to 39 berth in the dock basin once the new cranes are in place.

Maybe someone in the know can kindly confirm -- there may be some good photo opps.
