I am wondering what is the purpose of the ship?

Perhaps not very well known outside Holland but this ship was named after somebody who became a member of the Waffen SS in the second world war, and was rather proud of it. It is the father of the current owner of Allsees and he has defended the choice for this name by saying that he did many good things for the Heerema company. It sounds like saying Hitler was OK because he gave us the Autobahnen. I personally am not going to take any pictures of the ship.

There are a lot of aerial shots and some details of the ship in a Shipping TV video on the video page.
Essentially she is designed to lift and remove existing rig deck units at the front end, and jackets with some yet-to-be-installed equipment at the stern, and she also has a pipelaying capacity for pipes up to 68" OD.
Allseas say they are now working on a bigger version of the same for around 2020.

I really hope you will never drive on a german autobahn with your caravan. I think then it will better when Heereman will move to a german harbour and spend there the money.

Peter, what a lot of rubbish in one post. Wikipedia is by far the most reliable source of information on the internet, for sure. And I don't have a caravan. And if you have problms with my first name, perhaps the ship should have been Pieter Sjoerd, the first names of our prime minister Gerbrandy who served at the outbreak of the war. Then Allseas would have made a proper gesture, now they are just showing us the finger...

If I would own such a company as Allseas I would also name my largest ship after the name of my father.And I would be very proud of my father.
Who gave the name to your children? You and your wife and noone else. If some netherlad people think they need Gerbrandy on a ship as name they can christen a navy ship or the royal yacht.
in Germany we say: thisone who pays for something has the power.

Making such statements shows how little you know about Wikipedia and how it works. The quoted chapter was cited from an USA Today article about the naming controversy (http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-11-07-3812420165_x.htm) as clearly indicated by the inline citation (number in brackets) in Peter's post. Here is an excerpt from that article:
Hagelstein said Heerema joined the Nazis out of opposition to communism rather than enthusiasm for national socialism. He said he then switched sides and joined the resistance in 1943 "as he could no longer associate himself with the ideas of the Nazis."
He noted that Heerema was tried and released shortly after the war, which shows he "cannot have been seriously delinquent."
The respected Netherlands Institute for War Documentation said that's technically accurate. Heerema was sentenced by a Dutch court to three years in prison but quickly released, the courts having recognized his unspecified but "very important" services to the resistance between August 1943 and March 1944.
Taking into consideration that this is a somewhat "hot" topic at the moment, I'm sure that the article is watched by a large number of users who would quickly revert controversial edits.

Allseas has announced that they will change the name of the ship....a new name has not yet been chosen. but they said they listened to the protests from the society. Sometimes it takes a while before people see the light but eventually...
(and I do know how Wikepdia works and I also know that towards the end of the war a lot of Dutchmen sort of converted from supporters of the Nazis to supporters of the resistance. Perhaps I now might even go out and take some pictures,once the new name is in place.For the time being I am satisfied with the shot I took of this one,

I find it sad really, Pieter Schelte was, is a very fitting name for this vessel. I find it very brave of Allseas and Eduard Heerema to have the insight and balls (excuse my french) to undertake the construction of such an impressive vessel.(She is really all singen all dancing) Do not live in the past look to the future which Allseas do. In 4 months time she will depart the Maasvlakte 2 for her first job in the north sea to remove the topside and jacket of an oil platform for Shell (24500 tons). I wish her every sucess (I also wish that I was on board).
if you are still pissed at the Germans then do not drive Audi BMW or Mercedes Benz (Best Cars in the world).
One more thing is that she is generating about 450 million Euro to the Netherlands Industry

But unfortunately not in their insensitive choice of name. Being anti-German is not the same as being anti-Nazi. Karl Benz died in 1929.

Having never known my grandfather and one of my uncles killed as innocent hostages in cold blood by the Nazi occupiers of the Netherlands, I fully agree with Pieter Melissen.
This vessel should never have been named after a former member of the Waffen SS.
Only after the international transportation union ITF protested and started a petition asking Shell not to hire this vessel, the owners decided to better change the name.

This vessel is already unique in every way, so the scandal with its present name was really unnecessary "publicity" for her owners. The sooner they announce her new name the better.

you really missed the point, I am not pissed with Germans, but with a Dutchman. I guess you would not be very happy (assuming you are British) that the next Cunard mega cruise ship would be named the Oswald Mosley. (And I drive a French car, named after a former Dutchman who started building cars in France in the 1930's.)
